What are you guys running for a barrel contour on your F T/R rigs? Can I get away with a heavy palma or do I need to go with medium palma?

Last year I shot F T/R with my 23" HV contour 308. I built a new Open rig for this year and just don't feel comfortable shooting off the rest like I should. I'm planning on either selling the rifle or parting it out and building a true T/R rig. That way I can shoot my 23" for practice and save on the barrel on the comp rifle.

Surgeon action, NF BR or NXS 12-42, Duplin bipod and probably another Manners T4a since that what I'm comfortable shooting. I've also thought about having Joel Russo build an A5 out of walnut too.

What say you? Also, what other stocks are you guys running for T/R?

Re: Heavy palma for F T/R?

I am running a 29" MTU profile Brux (which I believe is even heavier than a heavy palma contour) with a cheapy B&C tactical stock/NF 12-42BR/Harris swivel w/feet...and I make weight in F-TR....so unless your bipod is really heavy and/or you are planning on a 32" bbl....you should make it under the 18.15lb limit

Re: Heavy palma for F T/R?

30" full taper Savage barrel, finishes at .999" at muzzle. I make weight easily (~17.3 lbs) with a Nightforce 12-42 NXS. If you have adjustable furniture on your stock, your mileage may vary...

Re: Heavy palma for F T/R?

Are you sending this to the same smith you recommended to me?

Is there a way we can do this together to save $$?

Also, let me know if he got back to you with any of that info for me, I think today will really be the deciding factor for what I do.

Re: Heavy palma for F T/R?

Thanks guys. My stock will be adjustable. My other T4a comes in at 4.5 lbs. I just didnt want to have to flute the barrel if i went with a MTU or heavy palma contour in order to make weight.

Brett, it will go to Joel, too, but wont happen any time soon. I still have to find a barrel, order a stock, etc. It wouldnt really save us any $ to send em in together. I'm hoping to hear back from him today.

Re: Heavy palma for F T/R?

I have a surgeon 591, manners T4A, and a Duplin bipod, and NXS 12-42 scope.

I make weight with a 30" heavy palma bartlien, I have about 9 ounces to spare actually, so you should be fine with a 30 inch heavy palma.

Re: Heavy palma for F T/R?

Thanks Panzer. That's what I wanted to hear. My 23" HV comes in at 16 lbs 10oz so I figured I would be ok, I just wanted to check with you guys first.

Thanks
Brad

Re: Heavy palma for F T/R?

Depends on stock and scope. I had t6o flute a heavy Palam when I had a heavy stock and NXS12-42, to make weight, but with Leupold MK4 I can run Heavy Palma.

Weigh all the parts, add them up and see how heavy a bbl you can get.

If you can get away withn Heavy Palma I would run that over medium weight Palma bbl

Re: Heavy palma for F T/R?

it will be fine as long as the rifle as it will sit on the line does not weigh no more than 18.18lbs
