Hi!
I´m going to get myself a new rifle in cal. 300 win mag. The rifle will be used for long range hunting, and competition/training.
I`ve been looking at several options, but wonder if anyone has experience or any advice concerning any of these rifles;
-McMillan tac 300
-Surgeon Precision (scalpel or remedy)
-Sako TRG 42
-AI AW series

How are they compared to each other?
Yes, I know the precision in all of them will be more than good enough for my use, but I´m still looking for the "little extra"

The price tag is not my main concern so if there is any other rifles I should consider, please feel free to leave a comment!
As if now, I´m leaning towards the Surgeon Precision, but thats more "gut feeling" than knowledge or actual testing...

Thanks!

Re: Help on decision; 300 win mag rifle

All of the rifles you listed would be a good choice, I would go with the one that fits you best and is readily available (probably the Sako?) if possible you should put hands on all your choices and try them out.

Re: Help on decision; 300 win mag rifle

If your gonna go TRG42(that would be my choice) you'd better hurry and find one. My understanding is they are no longer being imported to the US in 300WM.

Beretta USA continues to commit long slow suicide. I wish they would hurry up and bleed out so a real company could start importing Tikka and Sako. It would be nice to get some decent customer service and perhaps some calibers that enthusiasts actually want.

The options now are to get an Sako M995 and build your own.

Re: Help on decision; 300 win mag rifle

Surgeon and McMillian are both really expensive.

Even if cost isn't your main priority, I think that you could purchase the actions and spec one out the way you want and come out cheaper with one of the smiths on the hide. Of course that would take some time. But there is deffinately somthing to be said for making it your own.

Re: Help on decision; 300 win mag rifle

If you're leaning towards a Surgeon, I would go for the following:

- Surgeon 1086/R
- any match grade barrel 1/10 twist 26" sendero (consider fluting it for weight reduction)
- timney or jewell trigger
- muzzle brake (badger FTE, RWS PTG, etc.)
- Manners T1 or T3 mini-chassis with 90% carbon fiber if available (least weight)

- You'll have a "repeater" system that you can use for target, match, tactical stuff.
- Although it will be rugged, it won't be a 20 lb. monster, and it will be suitable for hunting use
- No bedding required
- All the features that a Surgeon system will provide

You can get a gunsmith, such as Gradous or Southern Precision rifles ("bugholes"), to make you the barreled action with a brake while your mini-chassis is on order from Manners. Make sure that you have Manners open up the chassis to fit whichever trigger you decide upon.

If I was buying a .300 WM, this is the exact system I would purchase. YMMV.

Re: Help on decision; 300 win mag rifle

icarus,

All the rifles you listed are excellent rifles, but I think you should also take a look at Robert Gradous. He builds a lot of custom rifles on surgeon actions and I assure you that you will not find a smith that will be any more meticulous on your build than Mr. Gradous.

Thank you for the inputs guys! As mentioned, I´ve heard a lot of good things about the surgeon actions, so will definitely have a look at the Gradous rifles as well! Thanks

Re: Help on decision; 300 win mag rifle

I would prefer the AI. The stock fits me and they feel great. My recomendation would be to get behind a few of them.

I almost got a mcmillian because of the unlimited free training program they have. My next rifle is going to be a magnum. I am going to "try" hard to keep it a light weight hunting rifle.

Good luck with your decision.

Re: Help on decision; 300 win mag rifle

If you're not concerned with the price tag and you're already looking into Surgeon, I'd call Jared at American Precision Arms.

Re: Help on decision; 300 win mag rifle

I'm Patiently waiting for a Tac Ops Alpha-66 in 300WM!! another option for you to consider

Re: Help on decision; 300 win mag rifle

I love Surgeon actions, but would also check out BAT.
Think about the bullet you will shoot before you order a build.

Re: Help on decision; 300 win mag rifle

Surgeon, I've been very happy with mine.

Just my humble opinion, but McMillian rifles are overpriced, and I think you can get better with a custom using quality components.

Sako is a great rifle, but something is concern depending on your timeframe is the TRG M10 depending on what happens with the PSR contract.

Re: Help on decision; 300 win mag rifle

I would deffinately go custom build. Robert Gradous would be great. I have noticed that all the rifles you are considering are really heavy. I would make mine a #5 contour. I have a M40 A3 and as much as I love it and as great as it shoots I don't hunt with it because of weight. #5 seems to be just right for long range hunting. I believe the following makers use #5 in there rifles.

McMillian Tactical hunter
Greybull Precision
Gunwerks

It will still be a 1/4 minute rifle. Something to consider

Re: Help on decision; 300 win mag rifle

Seriously ? Wait on a tac ops? The good news he's going to ignore this.
