I dont know how I noticed this but on my m1a when the bolt is held open I can hear something sliding slightly back and forth when I tilt the gun foward then backwards. Does anyone know what is moving back and forth. I dont notice it when the bolt is closed however.

Re: What is this noise?

I dont think its the firing pin cause the noise is coming from more upfront

Re: What is this noise?

With the bolt closed the tip of the op-rod pushes up against the rear of the gas piston. With the bolt held open the op rod is pulled away from the piston leaving it free to move inside the gas cylinder. When the piston gets heavy with carbon the piston won't slide as easy with the op-rod locked back. That would be a good indication that it is time to clean up a bit
