Sako TRG dilema??

I have been thinking about this for a week or so. I can't make up my mind. I am thinking about trading my Sako TRG-42 300 WinMag with badger base and the bipod and muzzle brake for a Sako TRG-22 or AI AE in .308. I never shoot the 300 WinMag (only has 10rd through it).

Let me tell you the reason why. I am wanting a 260 to do comps with and thought about re-barreling the TRG-22/AIAE to a 260 Rem. I also thought about just selling and do a custom build on a Surgeon Action.

I have contacted a couple places to see if they do trades and just waiting to hear back from them.

What does everyone think of this? Should I do it?

Re: Sako TRG dilema??

why not just buy a TRG22 in .260, it is next on my list from all the great accuracy review posted on this forum for the last year or so.
Sell the 300, with such low round count, you should get good money for it.

Re: Sako TRG dilema??

Finding a TRG22 in 260 will be a problem until they make another run. If you rebarrel your 300, you'd also need to get a different bolt from Brownells for $260.

I need a short action. The bolt face is also too large also, according to the threads I have seen. Unless I am wrong??

I didnt think they have the TRG 22 in 260 anymore? I thought it was just a short run of them. EuroOptic don't have them listed anymore.

Re: Sako TRG dilema??

They also stopped making the TRG in 300 WinMag also.

Re: Sako TRG dilema??

Buy or trade the 42 for a 22 and rebarrel or wait for the next production run from sako. I am going with the rebarrel to 260 route myself.

Re: Sako TRG dilema??

Your situation is similar to mine about a year ago. I had a TRG 22 308 and I was thinking about selling it for a Surgeon build. What did I do? I shot the hell out of the TRG and fell in love with it. Since then I have been collecting parts for the surgeon build and its about to be sent off to be completed.

You should not have any problem selling the TRG42. If you like the way your TRG fells that get the 22. I have never owned an AI but you will not go wrong there.

Bolts are readily available that you will need at Brownells. Having a long action means you can seat the bullet out as long as you want and still mag feed. I'm doing the same in 6.5x55 with an M995 action. Basically the same action on the TRG42. They made everything from a 308 to a 338LM on that action until the discontinued in it 93. All Sako changed where barrels and bolts depending on face size.

Here's the bolt you would need. TRG bolt

Re: Sako TRG dilema??

They both sound pretty awesome to me, but is one more appealing to you? Do you just want the same thing you already had in a different caliber? Or do you want to go through the process of doing one from scratch? Does it sound like fun to do a custom? It does to me, but it might not to you. I just put a 7mm08 barrel on my HS Precision 308 Savage. It came out real nice, but if I had it to do all over again from the beginning I would just start with an action and go from there. If that would seem more like a chore instead of fun then re-barreling is easier. The custom sounds like more fun to me, but either one will be a great rifle.

Re: Sako TRG dilema??

Will I be able to mag feed the 140gr VLD with the Sako Mag, or will I need the long action?

Re: Sako TRG dilema??

Dunno, I'm holding a TRG22 mag right now and measuring it looks like most you can do is 2.91". Not sure how far out you can seat that is a 260.

Re: Sako TRG dilema??

I just checked SouthWest ammo they seat theres at 2.859" (140gr VLD). I should be good with it.

Re: Sako TRG dilema??

But how far can you push one out in the neck in you roll your own I guess is the question. If you're gonna buy loaded ammo then you'd be good to go. I have the same problem with the 6.5x55. I can buy ammo all day long to mag feed from a standard mag but you can seat those 140's out past 3" long which will not feed.

Re: Sako TRG dilema??

I plan on hand loading sometime but I don't have all the equipment yet so I will be buying loaded for now, which will probably be SWA.

That's why I wouldn't get rid of your TRG42. You can always put it back original if you want to. All you are changing is barrel and bolt.

Also, Sako didn't discontinue the 300 I don't think. Just not importing to the US anymore.

And yes I'm a Sako TRG whore. LOL.

Re: Sako TRG dilema??

You can get the AI AE-MK3 with the 260 barrel already done, just contact Mile High Shooting, They are great to work with and set me up with my AW 260 and the Nightforce mil/mil scope that's on top of it as well.

My 260 reloads I'm using in my TRG are 2.887 coal. Feeds fine and I still have room to go.

Re: Sako TRG dilema??

I ran into a problem with a 6.5x55 that I'm working on with an M995 receiver. The stock mag for the .308/6.55x55 aren't long enough to let me seat over a 2.91" coal and I'd like be able to go to at least 3"+. I'm going to use the 270/30-06 M995 mag and will have plenty of room. I'm doing another build with an identical receiver as a .338LM using TRG42 mags. That's the flexibility with that action he has.

edt: When I said I, i meant i'm just sending the parts to Moon. lol.
