Hunting & Fishing Best Place for Praire Dogs

Re: Best Place for Praire Dogs

AR-50! Talk about vaporizing!!!
I was thinking about the 22 and 17 for inside of 75 yard work, the 22 is semi auto so I figured I would just walk the shots in if there was wind. But we just got permission today to shoot on a 2100 acre ranch with a whole lot of undisturbed dogs and shots as far as we want. Looks like I will be loading a lot more 260AI than I thought. The 140 Amax should make short work of them.

Re: Best Place for Praire Dogs

once you see the effect of the 22 centerfires on them...you won't touch the 22lr haha that's where the fun is, watching the dogs fly in the air. With the 22 you just hear a thunk and it either runs into it's hole to die or just stops moving where it is. Gets boring. But, to each his own. When you're packing that many guns, bringing 3 or 4 more ain't gonna hurt.

I'll tell you what though...a v-max from a 22-250 hitting a standing dog at 50 yards...what a show! The head and hind legs end up in two different counties!

Re: Best Place for Praire Dogs

That is kind of what I figured. The 22s are wishful thinking that I will be kind to my 204 and 260 and let the barrels properly cool and not be overheated. We will see once the Pdogs start flipping. However, my 17 won't really flip them, but it should do a nice job of slicing their heads off, it has proven to be quite violent on squirrels.

Re: Best Place for Praire Dogs

i hope thats cleared up by my next trip... may 2013...

i heard that they poison alot of them... is there any truth to this?

I will be looking for other spots to shoot in 2013 if the rosebud is a bust any pointers as i am a big fan of "way pre-planning"

That's not good to hear.

Is the plague a localized occurrence or is widespread? I'm just wondering because I hunt close the border of North and South Dakota, near Bowman ND. I still plan on going this june, but curious on how things will be.

Re: Best Place for Praire Dogs

if it is any thing like mobridge which is only 120 miles from bowman i was out shooting pdgogs on sunday and there was no shortage.

Re: Best Place for Praire Dogs

I call'd my guide yesterday who's on the east side of the rosebud and he said no shortage,,, he know many good spots on and off the reservation, so my trip for may 2013 should be a go...

Re: Best Place for Praire Dogs

Seems to be south of I-90 and west of highway 183! pretty sure Cheyenne River and Standing rock were not hit!

There is quite alittle! The Plague really tore em up though! 2013 should be back to what it has been in years past!

I am going to be off of lower spring creek road outside of RC blasting away in May. The ranchers said there is no shortage there either.

Only got the one pic from yesterday. Blasted this guy at 240 and watched him do a double back flip. Using a 55gr Nosler Varmint Ballistic TIp out of a Les Baer AR-15.

WARNING A BIT GRAPHIC!

Re: Best Place for Praire Dogs

I will be down there on thursday but sounds like the plauge might be running through there. Some big dog towns by white horse and in that country have been wiped out.

where do plan on staying hope it is not eb.

If it is a bad winter they wont be out much it is really dependant on weather that time of year

Re: Best Place for Praire Dogs

I'm counting the days till I leave for my annual trip to ND. So thank you for making the time go even slower! haha

Yep, though eastern Oregon is pretty awesome too. </div></div>

I think WY. Eastern Oregon is great but we call them sage rats and their 'towns' aren't as big. In WY we could get upwards of 200 in a day if you're in the right spot.

Re: Best Place for Praire Dogs

how is the Rosebud doing for dogs this early summer? heading out there in may i hope.
