ever been to NTC in fort irwin?

Re: ever been to NTC in fort irwin?

Yeah, if you can believe it, Ft Polk is actually worse than NTC. I know that's hard to imagine, but...

I actually work at Ft Irwin once a quarter when I'm in the States. It's not a bad gig: fly into Vegas, drink and gamble for a few days, rent a jeep, work out in the desert at Irwin for 3 weeks, then head back to Vegas for a few more days. That may be why Ft Irwin doesn't bother me much.

You know you're in another kind of place when they sell used magazines at the gas station and by used I mean like they grabbed it from beside the John on the way in to work. I suppose that's Louisiana for ya.

I love Fort Irwin. Where else can you come back and find a coyote in your tent. I've been there when it's well over 110 degrees and been there for the convoys in the sleet and snow in HMMVs with no windshields. Hope I never see that place again.

Re: ever been to NTC in fort irwin?

Hell NTC isn't half bad as it used to be!! As far as Ft. Polk!?!?

I got you all I was stationed at Ft. Polk for 4 years 5th Inf Div(M) nad I have 6 rotations to NTC. I first deployed there when the "Dust Bowl" was a Dust bowl no desert shades or latrines.

The OPFOR Regiment was tough and ran 24/7 you went there to see how well you reacted to overwhelming odds and the most difficult of situations.
I remember during a visit by General Peterson the FOSCOM Commander an Infantry Company Commader in my Battalion was asked if his unit was ready to go to war? He replied "Hell Yes Sir! Above the Rest!! (3/6th Inf) But when the General asked if he needed anything the Captain replied that we were going to NTC in a few weeks and he'd life a few more weeks to train up....

War we were ready for....NTC we were never ready "enough" That's one of the reasons when we went to Panama for Just Cause 4/6th only suffered 1 KIA and we were in the thick of it. Anytime you saw a M113 that was the 5th

Re: ever been to NTC in fort irwin?

One August rotation and one Feburary. I have also done a July JRTC and a November CMTC. Brother, they all suck. NTC was the best training experience of my career.

I hope that is sarcasm...

Re: ever been to NTC in fort irwin?

consider this: all millitary, the world over, have a committee that is always looking for the wettest, driest, coldest, hottest, most desolate, miserable places in the world. when they find one that stands out, they make it a military base of some sort.

Re: ever been to NTC in fort irwin?

Lol. I was stationed at Ft Polk when I did two rotations out to NTC. I'm honestly not sure which was worse.
