Rifle Scopes Ruger M77 MkII ring problem

The rear integral base for my Ruger M77 MkII is too narrow for some rings to be able to tighten on it. Rings that can't tighten on the rear work fine on the front integral base. The difference in width of the integrals bases is big enough for the eye to detect (after buying it of course). Any ideas (besides sell the gun)?

The rear Ruger-supplied ring that came with the gun when new is just a bit too loose to tighten properly ... it seems tight, but if you really twist on it (or fire the gun ... it's a 300 Win Mag) it will move. Some Burris I tried next didn't fit at all (10 years ago), but Redfields did, and being "high" ones they work fine with the 4.5-14x40mm I had on it. Now I'm switching to a 1.5-5x, along with a new stock (had the skeleton stock before), and wanted to use low mounts. Redfield doesn't make rings now that Leupold owns that name. The new Leupold low mounts I just bought are WAY too loose on the rear integral base, the ring just rattles around when tightened all the way. Any ideas for other rings, or a clever way to still use the Leupold ones?

Re: Ruger M77 MkII ring problem

Have you tried any of the Millet ruger rings?

I have a set on an old M77 tang saftey and they worked fine.

Re: Ruger M77 MkII ring problem

do you love the gun?

if you do, i'd recommend having a gunsmith make a base for it. i know a guy who machines a small locator notch into ruger tops & makes bases to fit. i'm sure some of the smiths here on the hide do the same.
i'll be having him do this to my m77 270 when it's time to rebarrel (and trueing the action at the same time).

Re: Ruger M77 MkII ring problem

It's an ok gun. That's a good idea, but I am trying to stay cheap for now.

I ended up trying a few sets of Ruger rings until I found one that was tight enough for my too-narrow rear base, and it seems secure now. It might not be though, hard to tell ... I also replaced the old skeleton stock with a Hogue, which I had to inlet a bit to keep the barrel from touching the fore-end, and now it's shooting all over the place. It could be either one I guess, so not sure if the base IS secure or just seems secure ... 300 win mag kicks a lot. I plan to put the old stock back on and see what happens.

Re: Ruger M77 MkII ring problem

I hace a ruger 77 MK II Target model ( 6.5 creedmoor ), I used leupold 30 mm high rings to install a sightron S III 6.5-24x50 and they work perfect and required very little lapping, almost dead on from the factory, I also replaced the laminated stock with a hogue ( full aluminum bed ), accuracy was average .6" at 100 yds with factory stock and factory 140 gr amax ammo, after I replaced the stock the bottom of the barrel was touching the stock, I went to the range and shot the rifle twice and didn't notice any improvement in accuracy so I removed the stock and trimmed it just enough to clear the barrel, I installed it back on and went to the range again and shot 4 5 rd groups @ 100 yds. Accuracy never changed it's still shooting between 1/2 and 3/4 inch but I like the stock a lot better than the factory one, I hunt coyotes and sometimes walk two or three miles and the hogue stock makes a lot easier to carry ( it seems to adhere to your clothes so you don't have to keep pulling on the sling over your shoulder ) and there is a big improvement in recoil it's almost nonexistent with this stock. Back to the subject in question I am happy with the leupold 30 mm rings.

Re: Ruger M77 MkII ring problem

Take a file to the bases under where the "clamps" screw down, a little off each side. If needs be you can drill and tap the screw holes longer or shorten the screw or add a washer. Have done this mod for several Rugers in the past, works good.

Cheers,

Doc
