Im sorry, I know I am asking a lot of questions. Rem 700 police, 338 Lapua. When I chamber a round i have to slide the bolt fast and then I am able to push the the bolt down. However if I chamber a round slowly and then atempt to close the bolt, it wont move and i have to push foward and down more forcefully to close the bolt. Does this make sense> Like the bolt wont close unless round is bolt is very firmly against round. I have not experienced this before. If I need to be more clear on what I am saying, please let me know. Thanks for the help.

Re: Headspace Problems?

How is the bolt without a round in the chamber?

If you have another remmy, compare the extractors on both, you may have a tweaked extractor.

Is this only with reloads? Factory ammo?

Post pic of your bolt face.

Re: Headspace Problems?

As Roggom said take a look at the extractor! This rifle should be equipped with an AR style extractor, check to see it moves freely and is not binding in its slot.

Re: Headspace Problems?

The extra moves fine. If I chamber round fast and close bolt, there is no problem. Only when I slowly try to close it.I also notice when I open bolt and slide back partially after chambering and rechamber it, there isnt any problems either, so I am thinking its just the extractor going over the rim. Factory 250g hornadys. How can I insert a picture here?

Re: Headspace Problems?

There is a ever so slight possiblity that the extractor may be running into the bolt nose recess in the barrel, but its hard to say without looking at it. Look for a shiny rub mark on the outside edge of the extractor near the bolt nose. It could also be that the springs in the extractor and ejector are just good and stiff as they should be and by going slowly just means more effort on your part. If the bolt closes easily after you have chambered a round already, I'd say headspace is probably not your issue.

Re: Headspace Problems?

I just had one of these in the shop the other day for some accuracy work. I will talk to its owner if I can remember this weekend and ask him if he has the same issue while trying to close the bolt slowly.

Also make sure the ejector plunger can be pushed flush or below flush with the bolt face.

The easiest thing to do is remove the extractor and ejector and try it. If the problem goes away its related to one of those two things. If you do that you will need to reinstall your extractor to get the round out though.

Also as a side note this testing should be done with dummy round or with the firing pin assembly removed, lifes just to short to have a accident.
