Gunsmithing barrel flute colors

Re: barrel flute colors

From what I've read; (never tried it)

1. Paint the entire barrel color #1
2. Once dry, apply long strips of masking tape over each flute
3. Using a marble, or steel ball bearing, push the sphere down the length of the flute, effectively cutting the masking tape at the flute/barrel parting lines
4. Carefully remove the severed masking tape sections from only the flute sections
5. Apply color #2

Re: barrel flute colors

Like I said, I never tried it.

If you're worried about it, paint the barrel in reverse;

1. Paint the entire barrel with color #2 first.
2. Add masking tape.
3. After cutting the tape, remove everything but the flute area
4. Paint the barrel color #1, then remove the masking tape from the flutes

Re: barrel flute colors

With Gunkote, I take and paint the entire barrel the base color, then bake it, after that, just paint the flutes the color you want. Then take a lent free rag with actone and wipe the color off the barrel, exposing the base color. Then bake again. Done.
