Bolt action for club shoots

I'm looking for a bolt action for my local gun club varmint shoots. We shoot 100 200 and 300 yards at varmint targets. The course is 5 targets 2 shoots at each target at each range. The gun must be factory with no mods done to it. I want to shoot a 308 and I am looking around the $1000 mark. I have a 8-32 mueller scope that I'll be using. I am looking at.
1. Savage 10 FCP K
2. Savage BVSS
3. Remington 700 varmint
4. Remington 700 police

I am also open to other suggestions on what to get around the price range.

Thanks

Re: Bolt action for club shoots

If no mods means you can't change the stock, then of the ones you have listed, I recommend the 700P.
The FCP savage you have listed is the tupperware stock.
The laminated stock savage would be a very good choice, but really needs bedding.
The 700 varmint comes in a very flimsy tupperware stock and, like the savage, would need replaced.

Other options in a good stock are the savage HS precision model or one of the accu-stock models, winchester stealth (if you can find one) or the CZ varmint kevlar

Re: Bolt action for club shoots

Have you looked at the Tikka 308's?

Re: Bolt action for club shoots

The FCP K comes with the accu stock now according to Savage

Thanks for the mention of CZ. I forgot about checking them out

Re: Bolt action for club shoots

Why does the CZ 550 varmint have a 1-12 twist? I plan on shooting 177 SMK not sure if that would work.

Re: Bolt action for club shoots

go with #3 and send light bullets, mine loved 125 noslers

Re: Bolt action for club shoots

Out to 300 yards you won't gain anything by shooting the 175's. 1-12 twist is fine with 168's and alot do just fine with 175 SMK. I wouldn't let the twist stop you if you like the rifle.

Re: Bolt action for club shoots

1-12 twist is what I have been shooting 175 all the way to 1250 yds, no worries there, under 300 yds they all touch.

Re: Bolt action for club shoots

Just in case your not familiar with this rifle I would go with a Remington 5r milspec. They are little more than a 700p but also fit your requirements.

That are very accurate rifles especially in that range.

I've looked at the remington website, but cant seem to find them. I see some target rifle with the 5R barrel but not the mil-spec one?

Re: Bolt action for club shoots

The mil-spec is not a catalog item.
Check budsgunshop.com
They go for right at 1000.
I have one, it shoots very well indeed.
The 700P will also shoot well and comes with a superior trigger.

That's cheating.

Excellent choice, please give a range report once you get it set up.

Re: Bolt action for club shoots

I will give a range report but it will be a while. Savage told my LGS it should arrive late July or early August. I have a Mueller 8-32-44 waiting when it does get here.

I just hope it will hang with the coopers. they seem to win every time in the stock class.
