Anyone care to share a location in the Pawnee Grassland to shoot at, I would appreciate the help. I'm new to the long range shooting and would like to get some trigger time in, so I can get to the point where I could be competitive in the local matches

Not sure about that exact location but any puplic lands (BLM and the like) that is miles away from residences, highways and the like that have wide, flat stretches are alright as long as you can sight your targets at your designated distances (i.e. 100yds, 300yds, 500yds, etc.) One thing I have to state is, if you want trigger time then dry fire. You probably meant range time for live fire though right?

Here you go,

Try to get out there on a weekday, or very early on the weekend. You will see folks shooting on road 61 but dont shoot long range rifle there, as the Rangers will kick you out. There are houses a mile or so behind. It is ok for 22lr, shotgun and pistol though. Look at the area I mapped out. When you get there, you will see "slips" where folks park and shoot. Best bet is to shoot to the east, also be careful as there are surveyors out and about.

One last thing, no steel ammo, the rangers stop by and will ask what you are shooting. Some guys caught the grasslands on fire a couple months ago.

Lastly, be aware of your surroundings, this is public land, so anyone with a car and a gun can go out and shoot. Sometimes idiots shoot north to south, or go crazy with mag dumps and sign shooting.

BTW, CO Rifle Club in Byers (off Hwy 36) is a good club. They have CAS if you go for that and a very nice 1,000 yard range. Annual membership is $65 and there is a one-day work bond if you're under 65.

Re: Shooting Area Northern CO

Please be careful while shooting LR on the Grasslands as a lot of hunters call coyotes out there also. I have seen some complete idiots shooting out there!

And please PICK UP EVERYTHING you bring in! Don't use the excuse you leave your targets(trash) for others to shoot. If others need targets to shoot at they need to bring their own. If you don't help keep it clean it won't stay open or they will stop the shooting.

BTW Byers is well worth the $65!
