Are redding dies worth the price difference when you can get Forster dies..send them a fired case and have the sizer customized to bump the shoulder .001?

I like being able to use bushings and play with the neck tension with the Redding dies. Forster are nice, but I'd go with Redding. After all, if you are shooting a 338 lapua the price of dies should be least of your cost worries.

Also, I think you are confused on what is achieved by sending Forster a fired case. Any die can be set up to bump the shoulder .001-.002. By sending them a fired piece of brass they can ream out the die so that you will have a desired neck tension without working the shit out of the neck as their standard dies do.

I run a Forster 338LM micro seater and it works well. I also use a Redding Comp seater for another cartridge and it's great.

I also have a couple of Hornady MicroSeating stems that I use on their InLine seaters and they work well and can be moved from die to die.

That is the nice thing about the Hornady micro seaters. I do the same thing. I move the seater mic stem from a .223 rem. die to a .260 Rem. die. I just keep notes in each die set to the mic setting for different bullet COL.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, if you sent me $500 and told me I could only spend it on dies, I'd switch over to Redding Comp seaters, but I use the Hornady seating dies for 223, 22-250, 308 and in the beginning, for my 338LM loads and they've worked well.

The InLines don't fully support, as I understand it, the case bodies like the Forsters/Reddings do, but I load pretty decent ammo, so I'm not jonesing.

I look on Ebay and here, for decent deals on the Comp seaters and one day I'll switch over fully, but no problems with the MicroSeating stems. Good value for the money. One $23 stem will work on multiple seaters, so what's not to like?

Re: forster or redding comp dies for 338lm?

I bought a set of RCBS gold medal match dies when I bought the rifle because I couldn't find the redding competition dies in stock and didn't want to wait so I figured I could use the RCBS while waiting on the redding, I loaded some 285 gr hornady match and 300 gr smk and find a load that had a es of 12 fps and did .4" @ 100 yds with the 285s, then the redding were back in stock so I ordered them and some berger 300 gr hybrid otm, well I couldn't load the bergers without the VLD stem that nobody had in stock at the time so I had to order it from redding and meanwhile loaded 50 more 285 grainers with the redding dies ( same load, new lapua brass, etc ), accuracy and es are better with the ones loaded with the RCBS and the VLD stem that finally arrived works on the RCBS dies as well as the redding so I am not sure wich set I'll be using but I am thinking RCBS, I will try the VLDs with both dies @ 300 yds and see what happens.
