So I want to be purchasing a Kestrel soon but I'm not sure which one to get. I know some of the higher end models have more features but all I really need it for is DA. As long as it can calculate density altitude accurately I really don't care about the "extra" features b/c I doubt I'll be using them. So what's my best bang for the buck?

Re: Which Kestrel to buy?

I have the 4500 NV but if you only need it for DA 4000 .

Re: Which Kestrel to buy?

I purchased the 4000NV and am very happy with it. I bought it from Triad. Good people to deal with...

Re: Which Kestrel to buy?

Im was looking to get one of these too. How does the Bluetooth feature work? Is it able to take readings and send it right to my Shooter Ballistic program on my iphone?

I was looking to get the 4500.

Re: Which Kestrel to buy?

The iPhone will not talk to any Kestrel via blue tooth, I have a 4000, wished I had a 4500 with ATRAG.

bluetooth allows you to hook up the kestrel with anything ... also devices you might have on you in the field. for instance using shooter, combined with an android phone. supposedly shooter will then directly draw the environment data from the kestrel without you punching in the numbers.

Re: Which Kestrel to buy?

I know you said your not very interested in the extras but Horus Vision sells a Kestrel that has a ballistic calculator built in for around 600 dollars from their web site.

But it wont work with an iPhone?

Re: Which Kestrel to buy?

Also intrested if it will work with ipod, iphone, ipad using shooter app

Re: Which Kestrel to buy?

The question was asked and answered above.

Re: Which Kestrel to buy?

How is the backlight on the 4500NV? I know its to help you not lose your Night vision. But is it visible during the day? Is it bright enough to see in full sun? I do most of my shooting during the day but will be doing some shooting at night time so would like this feature.

That sucks it doesn't work with the iphone. I guess I wont waste the money on the bluetooth then.

Re: Which Kestrel to buy?

I've only used mine under a canopy at the range. So the sun was never an issue. I can tell you it a classic led display. Black lettering on a grey background.

Re: Which Kestrel to buy?

Yes, You're able to adjust the contrast.

Does anybody have any experience with the 4500 + ATRAG?

Read one of the reviews on the Kestrel site that said the reviewer was disappointed with the data input side...are there any limitations that Hide members have encountered running this system?

Or would it be better to run a standard 4500 with a PDA/iPhone running Shooter? But this seems possibly a little "clunky" if the ATRAG package performs "all in one" and eliminates an extra stage of input. Having a single solution seems a lot more convenient for many reasons.

What's the Hide opinion/experience on this?

The LCD used on the Kestrel appears to be of the "transflective" type, which means that it does not require backlighting to be used when ambient light is present. I can easily read my 4500NV in direct sunlight (just stepped outside to verify that, in fact).

I just picked one up with the Horus ATRAG a couple of weeks ago. While I've admitted not had any range time yet with it (so take my comments accordingly), the user interface does indeed seem to be rather clunky. It's a simple matter of having a small screen and a four-way "D-pad" input device that can't match up to the HMI offered by a phone or PDA.

I got a 4500 + atrag a few weeks ago and have had it out twice. It's quite easy to use once you get used to it. Very easy to change targets or guns/ammo once you have all the data plugged into it.

I really like the fact that it's a single unit and don't have to lug my phone or pda around with the additional power requirements for another device.

The only thing I can think of that someone might consider lacking is in support for G7 BC's. I find the unit easy to use, accurate, and obviously a great form factor in the all in one design.

Re: Which Kestrel to buy?

Have the 4500 NV with Atrag.

Am updating it to the same one with Bluetooth to run with the FFS software.

I had the 3000 and was happy with it. With a 5 year warranty you can't go wrong.
