Well,I was going to build a wsm, but ended up choosing the 7 saum for my new chambering. It will be built with a 24" barrel,with a savage SA. I plan to hunt and shoot long range.

For the guys using the 7saum,Do have any good load data for 162/168 bullet? I have plenty of powder on hand to try.Lots of users here but see most use the 180 vld and little longer tube. I may try 180's but with short barrel might not get velocity.

Re: 7 SAUM 162/168

Regardless of velocity, do the 180 and don't look back.

Re: 7 SAUM 162/168

My next caliber will either be a 7 SAUM or a LA 284. Either way I would have to at least try the Berger 175 XLD. I just put on a 7mm08 barrel and I have debated trying the Berger 175 XLD, but I think I will have to stick with the 162 Amax as I really don't have the horsepower and it has a greater BC at the higher speeds which are out of my reach. Just looking at the numbers though, you might find it a better choice than the 180gr. At 3000fps the G1 is .710(Litz). I can't say how fast you could get it moving as I don't have one, but 24" isn't a short barrel and you could get more speed than a 180gr. Just thought I'd mention it since it's what I would like to do in the future.

Re: 7 SAUM 162/168

I ran a ballistic program and it shows the 168vld fatter trajectory to around 900-1000 yards, then 180's seem to take over. I'm just wanting to get a few ideas for load work and what works best in the SAUM.

ArmchairElite, I'm currently using a 7mm-08 and 168's. I get good speed but want something different with more horsepower too, that's why i chose the 7mm saum.

Skyking,

Great info, still need to finish reading your post. So you had the barrel coated? Sounds like it working out great. You have some targets i need to look at, see if i see an ocw node in there.

Re: 7 SAUM 162/168

Another good bullet is the Berger 175xld, Litz posted some good numbers on Berger's website for it, I don't think he corrected the published bc for it though.
The second batch of 1000 I bought seems to have ".020" more bearing surface than the first 1k I bought, giving me some pressure issues that I don't like.
But beware, ths bullet is way more depth sensitive than the vld, and when things go south, the results are immediate.

Re: 7 SAUM 162/168

Okay I have a little dilemma and have a few different brands of brass.

Brass measurements:

Nosler 300 SAUM 2.00"
Rem 300 SAUM 2.010"
Rem 7mm SAUM 2.027" / I have the most brass in 7saum.

I'm going to send Dave Kiff @ PTG a few dummy rounds to make a reamer for 168 Berger Hunting VLD's. My magazine maximum is 2.970" COL with .007" clearance. Should I send him the 7 saum or ?? Need a little help here guys. I plan to talk to Dave if I can and see what he says, but figure I'm not the first.

Re: 7 SAUM 162/168

When I had mine ground I sent him a dummy of the Remy brass. Just make sure you request a .317 neck for the thicker Nosler necked down brass.

Re: 7 SAUM 162/168

Well I finally put together my Stevens 200 7mm RSAUM. Came out pretty nice and decide to work with 168 VLD's and H4350.

Specs:
24" Criterion barrel
7saum rem brass Full length
Berger 168 VLD Hunting
H4350 powder
Wolf LR Primer
Seated .010" off the lands 2.954" col

Shot 56grs to 60grs. at 100 meters

I got pressure signs around 59.2grs. very faint, but got ejector mark at 60.4 grs.

A= 56.0
B= 56.4
C=56.8
D=57.2
E=57.6
F=58.0
G=58.4
H=58.8
I=59.2
J=59.6 SLIGHT SWIPE ON BRASS/ PRIMERS GETTING FLAT
K=60.0 SAME AS ABOVE
L=60.4 EJECTOR MARK/ FLAT PRIMERS.
STOPPED...

letters F , G, and H share same poi. I didn't finish OCW and made a short cut. Found pressure and worked backwards form their. Letter E looks to be a scatter node. 59.2grs had more recoil and muzzle sound changed,maybe due over pressure?

Going to work around 58.0 to 58.8grs. as ocw.

Re: 7 SAUM 162/168

Found 58.4grs H4350 as optimum OCW charge.

Retested finding best COAL:
A= .000" kissing
B= .040" off lands
C= .070" " "
D= .100" " "

again tested .075" off. Tried some tricks with
target A (7 shots) & B ( 5 shots)
