thats what i was thinking

are there any scratches on the bolt lugs?

Re: Bolt wont close on remington 700 308

back the screw out then close the bolt.....let us know

factory loads? Have you tried bumping the shoulders?

Re: Bolt wont close on remington 700 308

Also, take a look and the Scope Base Screws as well. Both Action Screw and Scope Base Screw holes are all the way through into the action so if their too long it'll get in the way of the Bolt.

If you reload, I'd suggest try some factory loads first to see if it stops doing that, if not, then it might not be the Reload issue.

But yes, let us know what's going on. I wouldn't fire it too much until figuring out what's wrong with it. Sorry to hear it bro, Sounds like a pain in the ass problem to have. Good Luck!!!

Re: Bolt wont close on remington 700 308

I would call Remington, there have been a few recent complaints I've seen regarding them not cutting a chamber deep enough. You can get really hurt if they did, and I would just let them handle the issue, or get it recut by a smith and true the action at the same time. You could even ask them to subsidize it but I don't think that would happen, as you probably violate the warranty terms/place liability in someone else hands.

Re: Bolt wont close on remington 700 308

moving the screws did not help. The rifle will chamber factory loads, but will not chamber one fired cases. Could it be a shoulder problem with my die? how do i push the shoulder back.

Re: Bolt wont close on remington 700 308

Sound like your bullet seat is to long. I have a 700 in 22-250 that if I get much past the recommended COL the bolt is hard to close or will not close.

Re: Bolt wont close on remington 700 308

I had the same problem w/ RCBS 300wsm dies, I had to have 0.001 cut off the bottom. so you can have this done or you can buy a new die set, but the one you have will not push the shoulder back any further if you are already "caming the arm over.

seriously doubt the bullet depth/ length is the problem because you will just be jamming/ seating the bullet in the lands

This is probably the problem. Ill look into it

Re: Bolt wont close on remington 700 308

What dies are you using? Sounds like they are not seated deep enough in the press. Or that you are using a neck-sizer, and the necks of your brass need to be turned.

Re: Bolt wont close on remington 700 308

Well if it's not the screws sticking to far through the action and hitting the locking lugs, and it really is the brass size, then you need to get a die made specifically to fix your problem. Brass being to big is actually common enough that there is already dies made to fix it.

Get the Redding Small Base Full Length Sizer Die 308 Winchester and resize your brass. You won't have these problems again.

Re: Bolt wont close on remington 700 308

So instead of grind off metal from the die, i took some off the case holder. Used the bench grinder. The case now gets resized fully. Problem solved, they now load smooth as butter. Problem solved. Thanks guys!

Re: Bolt wont close on remington 700 308

I had this problem with 2 Hornady die sets. 22-250 and 308 sets both did not fully resize the brass and I had the same issues you were having. I bought RCBS die sets and the problem is solved. Glad you got your problem fixed too.

Re: Bolt wont close on remington 700 308

I had the same "problem, when I "set up", too quickly, one time. It went up to the die, and just touched, without the "cam over", and half of them wouldn't let the bolt close. Funny what a thousandth of an inch will do!<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: Big_Rig_416</div><div class="ubbcode-body"><div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: SingleShot85</div><div class="ubbcode-body">I had the same problem w/ RCBS 300wsm dies, I had to have 0.001 cut off the bottom. so you can have this done or you can buy a new die set, but the one you have will not push the shoulder back any further if you are already "caming the arm over.
