Muzzle brake on a .308?

I sent a rifle of mine off to get a Krieger HV 5r installed. The rifle is a .308, I am wondering if 1.) is a muzzle brake on a .308 even beneficial enough to go through with? and 2.) do I need to have my smith cut my barrel to fit the brake or just thread it like I would to install a can? Thanks gents.

Re: Muzzle brake on a .308?

I put one on my .308. It definitely will be helpful if you intend to go shoot a couple hundred rounds in a session. FWIW, my 14 year old is slight of frame and he shoots the braked .308 without problem.

As far as cutting the barrel to fit the brake, it depends on the model brake. A Badger FTE or Surefire brake requires additional work to be done on the barrel (depending on the original contour of your barrel). My PWS-PRC brake spun on, just like a suppressor.

Re: Muzzle brake on a .308?

I've got a Badger FTE brake on my .308. You don't need a brake on a .308, but I like mine a lot. It cuts recoil by about 1/3 and I can screw the brake off and add a suppressor as funds allow. Just know it is a bit louder and hell on your spotter/shooting buddies.

Re: Muzzle brake on a .308?

Depends how averse you are to recoil. They do make getting back on target faster which can aid with spotting impacts, and follow up shots, if that's a problem for you. They also increase noise which can cause more problems for some shooters than recoil, and allot of fellow range users bitch about them, depending on design they can also kick up allot of dust. They are 5/8 by 24tpi generally, and obviously if you intend to suppress at somepoint one that's also an adapter would be wise. I wouldn't put one on a bolt action .308, as I find even sporter weight ones quite managable, but many do.

Re: Muzzle brake on a .308?

I was interrested in the surefire brake, i guess ill just buy the device and send it to the smith before he gets working on it. and as far as the loudness and the guy shooting next to me being blasted, well thats ok i only have public ranges t shoot at and maybe just maybe it'll keep the guys with stock AR's that try to rapid fire at 600 yds a few lanes away from me haha.

Re: Muzzle brake on a .308?

I have a RWS brake installed on my SPS-T, I like it more to prevent muzzle jump, but it is loud as hell. Shooting indoors the pressure can smack you in the face and take some getting used to. Outdoors is no prob.

Letting my daughter use this one for speed goats this season.

IMHO, the recoil from the 308 doesnt call for a brake, unless for a child or someone with a bad shoulder.

and COLDBOREMIRACLE....damn what a sweet rifle you have there in that picture.

Re: Muzzle brake on a .308?

I don't believe a muzzle brake is necessary on a .308. If the rifle came with one I would use it, but I wouldn't go through the effort to have one installed unless you have a bad shoulder. My 115-120lb wife shoots her .308 with 168 AMAXs, 45.8gr of Varget and no muzzle brake, so my guess is that you'll be fine without one:

Thankyou, you'll notice it doesn't have a break, a 19lb .223 doesn't kick much

Re: Muzzle brake on a .308?

I went with a JP tactical brake on my 308. Recoil doesnt bother me I got it because I can see the bulle impacts and make follow up shots faster.
