I've been thinking about buying a remington 700 sps tactical in 308 and then upgrading the stock and making it use AI magazines and putting a larue 20moa scope mount on it. But got an offer to buy a remington 700 police 308 and Leupold VXIII 6.5-20x Long Range Target scope for $1500 should I get this setup? I like the sps's 20inch barrel and would probably have the barrel cut on the 700p

Especially if you're gonna take a hacksaw to it!

Exactly, that's not a good deal at all.

You can get a brand new 700P 308 for $900, and the Leupold for $700. The mount and rings can be $50-400.

So you're only saving a couple hundred bucks buying his kit.

Re: is this a good deal?

Here's what i did. I purchased a 700p NIB for about $900. I'm using a take-off scope from another rifle and standard steel leupold base and rings to start out with. Over time I will upgrade the glass/mounts/rings. to me, spreading out the cost like that on the components of my choosing is a much more attractive option than buying someone else's rig. YMMV, of course

It is a good deal; just not for you!
