I'm looking at a NF NXS 8-32x56mm. Will 65moa internal adjustment plus a 20moa base get a 175gr. .308 out to 1000 yards? What is 65moa in mils? If it will get me there, how much elevation would I have leftover at 1000?

So 65 moa, means 32.5 up and down, then use the base and that gives you roughly 52.5 moa useable elevation. But due to needing some adjustment to get a zero then assume you have about 47.5 moa available for use.

Now, go use your favorite ballistics program and see if 47.5 moa will get you to 1k.
(I'll give you a hint.....you should be fine, just don't use 168's)

sawman 556,

Assuming you are in the center of your elevation range, you will have 32.5 MOA up and down. The 20 MOA base will give you 52.5 MOA up and 12.5 MOA down. More than enough for 1000 yards. A mil is equal to 3.438 MOA. With the 20 MOA base, you will have just over 15 MILS of elevation up and just over 3.5 MILS down. Hope this helps.

You will not know for sure until you zero your rifle. Use a 20-moa base and you are good to go.

Sorry I wasn't completely clear on my answer earlier. I was giving the total amount of adjustment of the scope in mils, not converting the measurement. The way the Nightforce is designed, the amount of adjustment will differ from the moa to the mil version.

Re: Will 65MOA get you out to 1000???

Thanks guys. I want the extra power but I'm skeptical about the elevation. I might go with 5.5x22 and pick up a Sightron 8x32 down the road. I also really don't want a 56mm objective. I have $2300 to spend. Is there anything else that I should look at? I don't need FFP. I do want illumation. Something close to 25x would be nice. I had a Razor and sold it. I never took it off 20x and the FFP bothers me for some reason. 25x, good glass, good internal elevation, illumination, 50mm obj, 30-34mm tube, $2300. What are my options?

it will work.

I have a Vortex Viper 6-20 that has 65moa. I used a 20moa base on my 308. Got to 1000yd in 41moa (it was cold), no problems

For the money, a 5.5-22x50 NXS is going to be hard to beat. You're going to spend a LOT of money to get that extra 3x. I loved mine, but had the opposite problem of you. I *HAD* to have FFP.

I have a NF BR 8-32x56 (50 MOA of internal travel) and on my 308 it only would zero to 500yds. Beyond that I needed holdovers. Once I put a NF 25 MOA base on, everything ran very well.

I don't know about where you are, but here in GA I rarely got to use the 32x power on my scope due to mirage issues. I almost always had it at around 20-25x.

Really if you don't need/want FFP, the NF 5.5-22x will be your best bet in my opinion.

I have the exact scope you are asking about sitting on a 20 MOA base and shooting 175gr SMK, it was fine to 1,000 yards but ran out at 1,050 yards.
