Just wanted to let those of you interested in these rifles chambered in .338lm and are concerned about the potential barrel life, I had the smith take a bore scope to my rifle with 994 rounds down the tube and he told me the throat looks to have over 90% life left in it. Needless to say I was amazed as I expected to get no more than 2500 out of the tube. I now believe that the combination of chrome moly material and cold hammer forging process crreates a barrel with extremely long life. Hope this info is helpful...

Re: Sako TRG 42 barrel life

Wow, that would be impressive if it really makes it to almost 10,000 shots.

Re: Sako TRG 42 barrel life

Yeah not going to lie I was extremely surprised and am still a bit skeptical and may get a second opinion to confirm what he said. However I am inclined to believe him as he has always proven to be a superb smith.

Re: Sako TRG 42 barrel life

I do think that hammer forged barrles "could" last longer b/c they have been hardened by the hammer forging process.

Re: Sako TRG 42 barrel life

Yes, from what I understand about the process it does make for better barrel life. However I highly doubt that I will get 10000 rounds out of the barrel, but i do think it may be possible to get 4 or 5000, which is amazing none the less. I'm also curious if throat erosion will accelerate at a certain point in sort of a slippery slope situation.

Re: Sako TRG 42 barrel life

4,000 to 5,000 is what I have heard many state they have got out of these rifles before it increased to above 1moa.

When I've seen smaller caliber barrels go, they go from showing wear to affecting accuracy within 200-300 shots.

I figured this might be the case.

My understanding was that barrels erode fastest when new and then taper off a bit from there. However when they start letting go later on it is in pretty rapid succession.

OP: What is your load, and what are your shooting habits?

I ran 30 rounds through mine, 6 groups of 5, in about 40 minutes in a match two weeks ago. That little barrel was awfully warm...

300gr SMK
91.0 gr retumbo
lapua case
fed 215m

I does 2750fps and I'm usually shooting strings of five at a good steady pace. A lot of the shooting I do is out beyond 1000m so not running a whole lot of rounds down range in a hurry.

Re: Sako TRG 42 barrel life

91gr Retumbo and 300smk HAMMERS in my rifle. Loaded as long as the magazine will comfortably allow.

Re: Sako TRG 42 barrel life

I'm sure once you are ready to rebarrel that you will try to sell your old barrel for new barrel price

wow really?

Re: Sako TRG 42 barrel life

I shoot a TRG 338 as well and have 2600 round through mine and still has 90 of throat no issues still holds 1 moa or less if I have it locked down well.

Re: Sako TRG 42 barrel life

Years ago , I was talking to a Finnish Army guy about the TRG-42 they where using , and he said they expected to get a max of 6000 rds out of them before the barrels would be shoot out and need replacing .

Bare in mind that is the 1-12 twist , shooting 250gr scenars at 2950fps , and no rapid firing of the rifle .
