I found a pair of Steiner binos in a pawn shop. I don't know if they are new production or mil issue. I remember seeing these in Shotgun news several years ago and they were cheap at that time.

They say man. In west Germany. They have a ranging reticle in the right lense. They are 8x magnification. I believe they are the artillery version.

The rubber coating is almost toylike but the glass seems to be very clear. I did a little research and everyone seems to like them.

Can anyone give me any firsthand experience with them?

Is the reticle in milradians?

Re: Steiner binoculars

I have a newer (2006) set of 8x32R's. They are nice binoculars. The armor coating is less than what I recall mil issue binos had in the 80's (mine are made in Germany not W. Germany). Some of the hardware is now plastic instead of alloy. I called Steiner on this and they stood by their product.

They are compact and fit well in the hand. They are more than adequate for my work needs and reality is most use is when on vacation. This is where they are not ideal. The infinity focus is sometimes lacking when you want to really define your focus. If your viewing is not life and death and you really want to focus on the bikini on the fantail you may not get that without dicking with the diopters.

The reticle in mine is a generic ranging reticle, no mil dots. There are stadia lines and your output range is based on whatever measuring unit you use for your known object.

At the right price I recommend them. If I had it to do again at $750 I might go with something else. Again great for quick acquisition over varying distances, clear glass, but if you have the time to gaze a focus wheel is nice.

Re: Steiner binoculars

they are our mil issue bino, there ok . never really any problems with them.unless i got a good deal on them i wouldnt be pushed on buying them though.

Re: Steiner binoculars

i have the 8x30 predators, great for hunting, don't weight much - and best of all is setting the individual eye focus and don't have to mess with it again, great for bow hunting (don't have to put the bow down to check something out)

Re: Steiner binoculars

I picked up a pair at a cabelas bargain cave about 10 years ago for $100 and couldnt be happier with them. The glass is nice and like Pat said you can set focus for each eye and forget it. Which is really convenient.

Re: Steiner binoculars

They were asking $225 for them. They seemed to be a reasonable pair for the price. I just wanted to be sure they weren't reproduced junk.

Thanks for all the info.

Mongoose, cool to hear from Ireland. I hope to see Ireland and Scotland in the next couple of years.
