I am wanting to build a new rifle that will be used for hunting deer and hogs and some target shooting for fun. Realistically it will not be used farther than 500 yards. I am thinking either 223 shooting the 80 gr bullets, or s 243 shooting the 95-100 gr bullets. But I keep going back and forth between the two. Planning on using either a stiller or surgeon action with a kreiger barrel. Which one would you choose? Also I do reload so ammo price and availability is not a big deal, but I don't want to get into any wildcats or have to fire form.
Thanks
Walter

Re: What's your thoughts?

considering this is for hunting medium sized game, the .243 is a better choice. Also, the .243 will be much more versatile if you need it for other uses down the road. The .243 is a great cartridge!

.243 all the way. Very versatile round. Put a 100gr. Partition in and go kill some pigs. Sounds like fun.

Re: What's your thoughts?

I know this is kind of off topic but Have you heard of the 300 Whisper? It's a fairly new round that is Gaining a lot of popularity right now! I've seen a lot of nice rifles built in that calibur and shoots very nicely out to 500 Yards! Also, between the 2 of your choices I'd pick the .243 Hands down!
