Any BMXers

Re: Any BMXers

About 15 years ago but I miss it so!

Had a black Schwinn ProMod 1 with Profile three peice and that bike was extremely light. I never went pro but raced ALOT locally and it was awesome.

Re: Any BMXers

The funny thing is there is a very nice track 10 min. from my house and I'm thinking about getting my kids into it.

But growing up in So Cal I raced with all the big names including going to school with Tinker Juarez.

Re: Any BMXers

Wow. much more responses than guessed. I'd like to see some older bmx photos. Alan H, where in WA are you?

Re: Any BMXers

Mike, I got a buddy from san pedro who raced professionally for S&M in the 80s, you might have raced him. Tinker Juarez is a crazy 24hr mtb racer now.

Good chance. Let's see some of the other names I remember, Dennis Harrah, Jeff Bottema, R.L. Osbourn, and a few others. I remember when 24" wheel bikes started racing and then the cruisers. Man you are bringing back some memories.

Re: Any BMXers

I've raced and free styled off and on the for the last 30 plus years. Got back into it for about 6 months last year until I realized why I quit the last time...Working in construction broken SUCKS lol.

In the 40 plus cruiser class around here we have some of the fastest guys still and a huge class at local races.
They went Pro back then and back to cruiser and have never quit.

Its all I can do not to get back into it because its fun as hell but not so good when you break things and have to work.

Just sold my factory modified RRS back to Troy Daniels who I bought it from back in 1983, He's a friend and was one of their factory riders back then, also raced on Kuwahara with Gary Ellis.

Re: Any BMXers

Yep same here too, in another life or so it seems.

Pistol Pete
Ronnie Anderson
Billy Griggs
Charles townsen
Eric rupe
Todd slavik

Re: Any BMXers

Did a little local dirt track racing and then moved on to DJ for a while. I XR- and DHMB now every now and then when I can borrow a something with more than 3" travel from a friend.

Re: Any BMXers

Those are some classic names. I started young in 78, I quit racing A & B Pro when the pro sections got to hard for me (94-95)and I got into Downhill MTB racing. I liked the 80s tracks that were an all out drag race. I raced all those guys that Fastford mentioned at one point or another. I even raced Greg Hill and Stu Thompson when I raced pro class at 16. Those were good times.

Re: Any BMXers

I'm in to older bmx bikes. I currently try to ride bmx, but the scene has been getting too video game like. Let's see some pictures of your old bikes or riding photos! AtOne, you race Port Orchard Indoor?

Re: Any BMXers

In the early 80's I was track manager at Wildhorse Creek Park BMX track in Powder Springs Ga.
My son raced, as did my daughter. Great sport. The track is still there, and the gate I designed and built, although somewhat modified, is still operating.
At the only National race we had when I was active we drew 600 riders from all over.

Not much draw now....

Re: Any BMXers

I never raced, but from my early teens till my early twenties I rode skateparks, street and trails. Camp Woodward 4 years in a row and worked the bmx/skateboard counter in my local bike shop for a couple of years. Still have my bike, but all my past injuries (and new ones) remind me why I don't ride anymore. Still miss it.

Yep, awesome to see its still going strong after all these years too.

Speaking of not bouncing at our age the dirt at the Indoor track is so hard that when I wiped out it stripped the powder coat off the top of my bars took the anodizing off the front of my brake handle down to bare metal.

Re: Any BMXers

Back in the day, right? I had a Redline with Skyway mags. This douche stole it though and I moved on to mountain bikes and very long rides once I figured out it was a feasible means of transportation.

Those were the days! The mid-late 80's was THE time for that stuff. The Haro and GT teams used to come to our school and do demos, that was really cool. I bet those guys could get laid just by popping a wheelie! I have no idea what it takes today...

Re: Any BMXers

Standard 125 was a sick one. I really wanted a Trailboss. I'm working on building up a Schwinn Blue Falcon. Brian Foster is still killing it at 40 years old!

Re: Any BMXers

Last frame I rode was a matt berringer, the first one S&M ever did with a hidden headset. That frame was great. Good geometry, light but not flimsy...awesome.

Going to try riding Freestyle fixies for a while. Just because.

Re: Any BMXers

Had a few twin-spar Torkers anyone remember those? Or better yet.. Anyone remember the movie Rad?

Re: Any BMXers

Friends and I rode a lot of dirt back in the day. Broke my femur in three places on asphalt, that wasn't fun. Transitioned into mountain biking on the local woods trails. Bike got stolen in college. Now I have a job and can afford a nice bike again, time to get back at it.

Re: Any BMXers

I rode '99 - '06 almost every day... Couldn't afford to keep geting injured, work took over.

Really miss those days, would like to get back on it but times have changed and the skate parks are full of scooter kids that are more dangerous than an a pissed off snake!

Re: Any BMXers

I raced in the early 80's here in Texas and went to the Grand Nationals in Oklahoma City every year for many years. I was just a young buck and learned to ride a bicycle at the local track. Quit racing at around 12 years old and started to play conventional sports.

Good times, my dad was really into it and drove us all over the state and the ajoining states.

Raced BMX bikes with what we used to call sew up tires..pretty skinny tires and very light 20" frames.

JMC
Rebel
JAG
GT

Re: Any BMXers

Yep, guilty here. I raced for several years. I rode Torker, Rebel, Hutch, and finally MCS. Started on 20 x 1 1/8" rims, I'm scared to think about what would happen to those rims if I even sat on those bikes again! What a blast, we would ride all day long and never even think about being thirsty or tired.

I still have a Torker Cruiser hanging up in the garage... Maybe I should go pull it down for the weekend.

I raced at Oak Mountain mostly, any body from around there? I still remember my nemesis's name- Chad Eiler... I never could beat him... His family was all in to it, had the full on BMX trailer that looked like a well stocked bike shop. I had to ride my bike to the track!! He'd win 2 of the 3 motos and I'd try to get him to do a fun run and just show off with us for the last heat, never would do it. All business. I hope he works in a bank now...

Re: Any BMXers

Never raced but got my youngest daughter into it this year. I am not sure which costs more, the guns or the bikes. Started her BMX on a redline, moved into a hyper framed custom and now on a GHP custom. As for cruiser she started on an Intense complete and now just finished a custom Schneider framed cruiser for her. It seems to be something she really likes also seems hard on dads shooting budget. She is 6 years old so she is starting later than some and earlier than others.

Not 100% sure on that. I do know the reason for the design was because it was easier to manufacture. At the time it was introduced I don't even think the name "Torker" was around yet. My understanding is that Steve Rink approached the Johnson family (creators of torker) with the design.

If I remember correctly the father of the Johnson family was a experimental aircraft pilot and made the first frame out of scrap plane parts.

Wild. Have you seen how much people are selling early 80s bmx bikes for? Some people are getting a lot of money. On a side note, any got a old school bmx build in the works?
