Rimfire competition question

I'm curious about getting into some rimfire competitions. As I understand it, most NRA smallbore competitions are done with iron sights. Is this correct?

What about silhouette target competitions? I'd prefer to shoot in a competition with a scoped rifle. What kind of comps are you guys taking part in with scoped .22s?

Re: Rimfire competition question

The smallbore silhouette is done with either irons or scoped, most use a scope, and it is all offhand, 4 different distances.

There is also ARA benchrest, and although there is a "production class", most of the competitors use rail guns, or completely modified alien technology :), to run with them take some $ and some excellent wind reading capability.

This'll get you to the NRA area with tournament information, you can click around and find out more. http://www.nrahq.org/compete/smallbore.asp

Nra rulebooks, will tell you what you can compete in with what you have: http://www.nrahq.org/compete/nra-rule-books.asp

CMP has a sporter competition: http://www.odcmp.com/nm/rimfire.htm

Then there is the Ruger Rimfire Challenge: http://www.ruger.com/micros/rugerRimfire/index.html

Personally, I'd like to see an organized tactical type short and long distance type rimfire competitions, however no one has anything like that as far a nationwide sanction. There are many localized .22 tactical matches or side matches to "main events", but nothing organized as the organizations mentioned above.

I did have a half azzed notion of starting such a thing (heck even NASCAR started from a simple idea) but was put to the side temporarily. I may need to revisit that to see what interest there may be in it. Standardized COFs, a few different rifle divisions, etc.

Re: Rimfire competition question

We shoot fun matches on the second sunday as an informal group.

Last weekend was golf balls at 50 and 100 yards... tie breaker (a father and daughter went 10/10 at both 50 and 100 yards) was paintballs at 100 yards...

May and April were medicine match - tums, tylenol, asprin, sudafed at 25 and 50 yards. Tie breaker in April was splitting playing cards at 50 yards...

Next month is reduced silly-wets at 50 to 125 yards. Sometimes we will do skeet clays and/or bowling pins at 200 yards. Some times we do steel at short ranges with rimfire pistols or rifles... more of a speed and run what ya brung kinda thing.

Re: Rimfire competition question

top predator I have been thinking about starting some rimfire tactical matches out here in the desert area my self. I was figuring on aprox 1.5 moa targets anywhere from 75-375 yards out similar in terrain to what Brad from AZPRC has put together just shortened up. Jeff ...............

Re: Rimfire competition question

if you are around the houston area there are multiple matches a month to come out and check out

Re: Rimfire competition question

Curt, probably the best advice out there is to visit your local range and see what events they are holding there. Once you find out what matches they hold and interest you, then you could build the gun that you want for those events. It doesn't make much sense building a bullseye pistol just to find out that there are no bullseye pistol matches.
