I'm turning 21 in about a month which means I can finally buy a pistol. Only thing is I've only is my experience with handguns is limited because i've only rented them once at a range.
But I know I want a 22 because ammo is cheap which is good for me and it's a good round.
Anyways i'm looking for something under 500 dollars which shouldn't be a problem, is reliable because I can easily fire 500+ through a gun before cleaning it, light weight because I might get back into back packing again, and if possible has or can have a threaded barrel incase I ever move to when I can own a silencer.

Re: Good 22 pistol

Ruger 22/45. Easily the easiest to load up mags on. Runs like a top, has a grip similar to 1911 which can take 1911 grip panels, fixed on the barrel which is way nicer than on a reciprocating slide, spot for a rail to attach a mini reddot, now with threaded barrels and a new alluminum upper with stainless sleeved barrel.

Yup +1

I bought a mark II when I turned 21 ish. Still have it only its alot quieter these days ! of all the frinds who I have shot with it still runs better then all the other. best aftermarket support

Buck Marks are ok too, just not as refined

Sig mosquito = lame

Walther P22 = Jam, Jam........

Re: Good 22 pistol

Are you dead set on a .40 ? 9mm is a usually a lot cheaper. Also have you considered the G19 and G23 as a 'smaller' but lightweight alternative?

...think you meant the 'First Pistol' thread.

Re: Good 22 pistol

i have a mark 3 target model a 22/45 and a browning buck mark. all are excellant guns except the ruger is a bitch to tear apart and put back together. the buck mark is simple

Re: Good 22 pistol

Ill disagree on the ruger 22/45. To me they feel cheap and the controls are gritty. That's my opinion. The mark 2's are a fine pistol. If you wanyt a 1911 grip try a 1911-22 by sig or gsg. They have threaded barrels as well

Re: Good 22 pistol

Own a Mark I, Mark II and Mark III.

The Ruger Mark III as sold is a piece of junk.

Bad Chamber, sloppy (filthy blow back and lots of pop)
Terrible trigger
Terrible magazine drop
Loss of ability to operate slide with mag out
Loss of ability to fire with mag out
Absolute joke of a chamber indicator that does nothing but create a place for crap to get in.
More parts that fit poorly and are easy to loose
A firing pin that is poorly heat treated and poorly formed

The Mark III should be off your list unless you want to strip the pistol back and spend $$$ fixing everything that happened to this once fine pistol. Imo, anybody that owns a III and thinks it should be recommended never owned a prior release.

Re: Good 22 pistol

In your price range, the Buckmark is almost a universal favorite. As others have mentioned, the Rugers can be a good value as well, but look for a used Mark II rather than picking up one of the more common Mark IIIs.

I have a III and put lots of rounds through a II.

I changed the grips and put a taclite threaded barrel on it.
Never had a problem with the mag release. In fact I prefer it to the II.
I don't feel the need to have the ability to fire it without a mag inserted.

Re: Good 22 pistol

Buckmark with the URX grip. I have a Ruger MKII that hasn't been shot in probably 10 years. The Buckmark gets shot a LOT and almost 100% of the time with the SWR Spectre.

Re: Good 22 pistol

The Walther P22 is a small and compact little 22. We've had alot of good feedback on that piece at our store. The barrel is already threaded on them as well. Next to that I would say the Browning Buckmark or Ruger Mark.

Re: Good 22 pistol

Different approach for ya buddy... Buy a glock 19 or 17 and purchase the <span style="text-decoration: line-through">advanced armament</span> advantage arms kit (.22 slide/upper)... Best of both worlds. This would allow you to use the same holsters (both gun and mag holsters) and all controls are identical (fine tune your motor skills when shooting .22 and step it up to center fire once your comfrontable).

Plus the AA kits run like sowing machines....

I know this is more then you intended on spending but you won't be disapointed.

My 2 cents... Be safe and have at.

This for the win, get something that will duplicate what you are working towards.
Build muscle memory of drawing and shooting, reloading and malfunction drills( 22lr. will guarentee) with the conversion kit.
Also the AA conv. kits slides run fatter than the Glock, so a plastic/Kydex might have more drag like my Safarilands.

Thanks for the correction.

I run a bladetech holster (kydex) and your statement is true. A quality holster (such as bladetech) has tension screws which allows the end user to adjust for proper fit and function.

+1 on the Browning Buckmark.

THe thing I like about the Browning Buckmark is that they got it right the first time around. I still have my first Buckmark that I bought on my 1st pistol, and its .. well ... it's almost as old as you are!

In my opinion the Buckmark Camper in the 5.5" barrel is the most accurate 22 lr production gun in it's price range. A new Buckmark, if you can find them, can go for around $300 before tax.

The Ruger SR22 has it's finicky ammo issues. I borrowed one and shot several types of ammo through it, and it tended to not like a few of the more popular ammo brands that I shot through it.

Re: Good 22 pistol

I like my ruger sr 22 .running good and eats cheap ammo without jams.

Re: Good 22 pistol

I like my Walther P22 but you do have to use more "expensive" ammo. I only shoot CCI mini mags and it runs with no problems.

Re: Good 22 pistol

Another option not yet mentioned is the S&W M&P 22 pistol. Its design is based on the full size 9mm and it comes with a threaded barrel. I recently picked one up for just under $400. It shoots great, nice trigger and I have 2000 rounds through mine with no jams. Its great for formilarity and practice, I use it as a cheaper alternatve to shooting my M&P 9mm and .40s.

Had a mkIII now have a buckmark.
The ruger had horrible tooling marks on the inside of the receiver, the external parts were all well finished however. The inside was so bad that it looked like it was cut with a file by someone on speed. It shot really well and was a decent gun. The II that my dad has is in another class for overall quality.

The Browning that I just got is hands down a better overall pistol. Nicely machined and well assembled. I prefer the grip angle and overall feel of it more than the Ruger as well.

Re: Good 22 pistol

The Walther can be fun, but mine is picky about ammo unless I have the can on it (which is most of the time, so not a big issue, but that does run the purchase price up a bit) and I've had problems with the hammer following the slide at times - seems to be related to how often I clean or don't clean it. And, of course, the slides have been known to crack. Hopefully you'll catch that before it comes completely apart. S&W will fix them under warranty, but it takes time and shipping, and then I had some failure-to-fire problems with the new slide, probably due to the firing pin being a little tight. Seems to be ok now.

In other words, I'd lean towards a Ruger or Browning as suggested. I have a Beretta Neos, which is solid and works reasonably well, but it doesn't seem to get out of the safe as much as the others. Try them on, see what you like. Maybe you can find a used Ruger Mk I or II or Colt Woodsman or S&W Model 41...

Re: Good 22 pistol

Get the Ruger or if you can find a Sig Trailside (re-packaged Hammerli Xesse) buy that.

Re: Good 22 pistol

Ruger 22/45, sights or rails, with factory threaded barrel

Browning buckmark...but you'll have to thread the barrel or buy a new upper

I owned a Walther P-22...ate everthing, ran suppressed, never an issue. Some have had poor performance

GSG or Sig 1911-22...also suppressor ready

Might I suggest something different...look at revolvers chambered in .22LR. Several to choose from in your price range

Re: Good 22 pistol

Ruger Single Six with extra 22mag cylinder, everyone should have one and they cost right around $500

Re: Good 22 pistol

I don't own one (yet) but the new Ruger SR22 has a great list of features and are supposed to function really well. That would be my first choice.

Next choice would be a Browning Buckmark with threaded barrel.

Ruger Mk2 varients are a PITA to disassemble and work on so it's one of the last in my book, although they shoot well.

My main complaint with the Browning and Ruger Mk2 series is their weight...they're anything but light...

As mentioned a Glock with .22LR conversion would be a solid choice as well.

Re: Good 22 pistol

A revolver. With a revolver you'll take more time in learning to shoot and not be in a big rush to unload a clip. Remember too, you are free to own more than one gun. Suggest a .22, many around, at least a 6" barrel, I have a Smith M617 8 3/8th with Gilmore red dot.........suits me just fine. xray9
