My guess is Chad uses Unicorn tears for a bedding compound!

Thursday or Friday of which week?

Maybe you should find a guy that's actually looking for work and wants to make a name for himself rather than calling in favors

I'm sure there are plenty of qualified painters to be found in a motor scooter town.

Changing your mind a half dozen times on color, airbrush work, and me driving 80+ miles for nothing (to whittle on a cheek piece that didn't need cutting and fiddling with an adjustable buttplate that we we never ended up installing) certainly didn't have anything to do with it I'm sure.

Its due to deliver today sometime. Since it's so late I'm not expecting it till either tomorrow or Monday.

Going home myself. Have a great night Jimbo.

Base color has not changed since it was placed "in the hands" of the painter.

Air brush work was canceled due to the air brush guy apparently not wanting to work.

The bolt / cheek piece clearance should have been checked before it left the shop and a confident answer would have sufficed. I have first hand experience with one of your rifles that has this issue. I didn't want to live with it.

The adjustable plate was mentioned since you were still waiting on paint. I really don't think the 5 minute conversation held the project up.

If the painters actually wanted to paint, there would have been no chance to even discuss changes let alone attempt to get them done. I'd still like to have airbrush work done to the stock but, when i'm told the work should take a week and it hadn't even been started in 2 weeks, my patience wears thin. Maybe it was an issue getting the stock delivered the 80 + miles that held up the project. I dunno, i'm not running the show. I'm just a paying customer.

Have a nice weekend.

Re: 300 Norma Magnum Ackley Improved

Maybe instead of trying to get a rise out of people by discussing business in a public thread you should try to send Chad a PM and get things worked out. From what I've read, seen, and heard he does flat out killer work, I would expect this one to turn out just as good. He builds "custom" (I know a lot of people hate this term but I'm using it) firearms with exceptional craftsmanship and doesn't take 9-12 months to do it. Also have to remember he's not taking it to a drinking buddy to shoot it with krylon pain, he's taking it to a professional who also does high quality work. I'm sure you can get that same painter to paint your stock through normal non-buddy channels, but I bet it would be very low on his list, so be thankful he does these favors for Chad. If he took it to another painter, someone would bitch and moan because the quality of his work isn't up to the same standards as the old painter's work......can't win for losing. Chad builds great firearms that are works of art and since he farms out the paintwork on the stock, he expects it to be the same quality or higher.

When you bring the rifle home, why don't you evaluate the work and ask yourself was it worth it, I bet I already know the answer.

Re: 300 Norma Magnum Ackley Improved

You should know the deal...you can have it fast, cheap, or good...any two of those.

Its custom work from a builder with a good reputation and a lengthy waiting list of people wanting work done with cash in hand.

Gotta be willing to wait.

Re: 300 Norma Magnum Ackley Improved

Final Assembly:

No too chabby me thinks. We decided last minute to change the metalwork to Sniper Grey. I think it goes much better with the stock than the black did.

This is a difficult gun for me to photograph well. The sun is getting low here and to me the paint either looks black or dark blue. I tried messing with different angles to get it to really "pop" like it does when you just look at it.

Maybe some more in the morning. . .

Hope you like it Jim. We'll cook a few rounds through her and then she's all yours.

great looking color on that rifle.

We definitely need to talk paint on my Barnard / Manners T2-A inlet and bedding project.

Re: 300 Norma Magnum Ackley Improved

C., is that the one you were painting yesterday when I called? That is bitchin.

(this is from my anal retentive side: What are the white "flakes" on the grip of that stock? Just the way the sunlight hits it? Or is it in the color of the paint? Just curious.)

That is a beautiful piece of work. Thank you for sharing.

Re: 300 Norma Magnum Ackley Improved

Hows she shoot? A 300 NM AK IMP sounds like a beast. Shooting 210 out of her?

Re: 300 Norma Magnum Ackley Improved

Nice looking rifle chad. But jim is going to wish he had a rogue instead!

Re: 300 Norma Magnum Ackley Improved

Will be interested to compare loads and results.

I am finishing a 300 Norma Mag with shoulder pushed back and the shoulder angle at 40 degrees. I also trimmed the length to 2.450". Seated with a 230 Berger Hybrid, it has 92.4 grains usable case capacity with a COAL of 3.375" .

Barrel is a 32 inch 10 twist for use in F-Open so no muzzle brake but rifle weighs 22 pounds. BAT M Action with a Robertson GBF stock. Have an S&B 12-50x scope for it

The reamer was set for the 210's so, I'll be trying them. Ultimately, i'd like to shoot the 225 Hornadys and 230 Bergers at longer ranges (2000 +).

210's should be fine when I shoot the Intimidator which has a piece of steel hanging at 1165yds on the normal COF.

Re: 300 Norma Magnum Ackley Improved

That paint job is bitchin'!!!!!!
Love the blue.

The muzzle brake engraving is sweet!

Re: 300 Norma Magnum Ackley Improved

The "flakes" are little dust/lint fizzy's from the terry cloth towels. I'd, wiped, buffed, rubbed it so much that static built up. Didn't have a detail cloth here that I trusted to be free of abrasive dust so I left it.

Paint is 2011 BMW LeMan's Blue. Dark blue with a pinch of metallic in it.

Not too chabby. The engraving was fun. Just something to torment Zachary with.

She'll be shipping Monday. Just have the barrel left to scrub.

Re: 300 Norma Magnum Ackley Improved

Its JB Qwik Weld for the bedding. Any "smith" in his right mind knows that the Qwik is the best out there.

I want to send Chad my rifle so bad. I am just afraid he is swamped and by the time he gets to it we will both be collecting our pensions.

Re: 300 Norma Magnum Ackley Improved

Chad, sent you another email. Looking forward to talking with you tomorrow before you get my rifle boxed up.

Re: 300 Norma Magnum Ackley Improved

Chad did you do the skip fluting on the barrel.Or was it ordered that way.I really like it alot.

Have you had this beast out to Thunder Valley to ding the steel at 1 mile yet? How does she shoot?

It's been back in SD since Dec 5th for some changes. I doubt that it'll be back in Ohio to shoot at either match in Jan by the sounds of it. He's pretty busy out there with new builds apparently.

I've not put the first round on paper so, I have no idea what it's capability is going to be let alone had the chance to ding the steel at a mile.

Sorry to hear that since the thread started in mid-August. Hope it all works out for you and maybe I'll get a chance to see it in action at TVP at some point. Good luck!
