I want to get into long range shooting with my friend who has a 300WM savage. After looking around for a while I have picked a .308 AR-10 type rifle. Im thinking il learn how to use the gun in .308 then go to 6.5 creedmoor or .260 upper later.

My budget is slim, but I found an Aeroprecision/Armalite SPR-2 using a 20in match armalite barrel for $1579.

The lower is an armalite pattern and I can not find a 6.5 armalite pattern upper. So what other complete .308 AR type rifles are good?

note I do live in california.

Re: AR10 choices

I fired a Rock River 308 AR, it shot pretty well. I don't link the mag release button though.

Re: AR10 choices

For a budget of $1500, you're gonna be hard pressed to find a precision .308 because the price starts around $2000.

Re: AR10 choices

+1 for what killshot said, I have a highly mordifyed Armalite and it shoot 1/2 MOA all day but not for $1500. when this .308 barrel is shot out i will replace it with 6.5 creedmoor though.

Re: AR10 choices

I do not agree with killshot or attherange.

ARMALITE has been making very accurate AR-10s since 1996.

And!!! they have been having great 4th of July & Christmas Sales on these two uppers:

1) AR-10A4 20" {never met one that couldn't do sub-0.75" @ 100yds with fodder that it liked, and that is a chrome-lined barrel} $650.00 plus @ $12.00 S&H to your front door like pizza.

2) AR-10T 20" $799.00 plus @ $12.00 S&H... just like pizza

www.762sass.com has:

A) the stripped lower receiver for $205
B) LPK w/o trigger $64.95
C) G SSA trigger $180
D) A2 buttstock kit $90

So, how much have we spent on a 10T, hmmm?

Ah, @ $1400.00 shipped with a [justinwilsonvoice]Gawr-on-tee[/justinwilsonvoice] of ONE (1) MOA because most people can't shoot.

If you need to force yourself into spending $2K or more, a Krieger barrel with headspace matched to your bolt will take you right there. If you AIN'T getting the job done after that, well hell, it is your fault.

Best to you.

EDIT: responded after only reading the +1 from attherange and not his whole but very short post. I see where he may be coming from and his future choice of the 6.5CM is a sweet one. I would probably push it to a GAP 6mmGAP/CM or whatever it will end up being called. Barrel burner or not.

Re: AR10 choices

There is wisdom in these last two posts. The Armalite will shoot under MOA. I ahd a chromed lined A4 that I free floated and in did a solid 3/4 MOA out to 500 yards with match ammo. At the time I had the rifle 500 yards was all I had access to. I have a T that is scarry accurate as long as the shooter is locked on. Buy your upper from 762SASS and start shooting....

I think the Armalite rifle you mentioned is probably the best out of the box option at that price. FWIW I built my own and when everything was said and done I was into it 1600. Also, I watched the classifieds and sales and bought everything except the trigger for less than retail.

DPMS rifles will too and for less money. There is also a CMMG version of the DPMS SASS that is a good shooter for about 1300 bucks. I like the Armalite NM configuration better though.

Re: AR10 choices

Just make sure it has a 11.25 or 12 twist, If DPMS would only learn that a 10 twist is a little too aggressive for projectiles that can fit in the magazine...

Can we let him wait and see what ARMALITE does for the 4th of July Sale?

EDIT: To help improve my karma:
1) I will assemble his lower with his chosen parts at no cost
2) Pay for return shipping and refund his FFL fee (my FFL doesn't charge)
3) Give all pertinent info to any Mod here (FT308W has known me for two decades, seen my resumes and DD214s and knows that I use Precision Instruments' split beam torque wrenches or Proto torque drivers because my hands/wrists are not calibrated)

BTW, always had wanted to enjoy a Sarsaparilla or bourbon with you while talking .308 ARs.

Re: AR10 choices

I want to thank every one for the great responses.

The 4th of july sale is interesting, but I cannont have a completely matched armalite rifle in california because armalite lowers are banned by name. It looks like 762sass has aeropercision complete california legal loweres for sale.

Re: AR10 choices

Armalite has their AR-10T uppers in 260 remington for $998 suggested retail on their website. Consider the full rifle has a suggested retail of $1900 and they are on gunbroker for $1500, you should be able to pick up one of the 260rem uppers for a street price of well under $800.

Your budget leaves you with $700 for the lower half... For $700 you can build yourself one kickass lower with a match trigger and whichever stock you want!

Re: AR10 choices

Looks like the Fourth of July sale is only 4% off. It's better than nothing, but not worth changing plans over. Amounts to less than a hundred bucks discount for the price point you're searching in.

Re: AR10 choices

I bought a DPMS A couple years ago and it has been a great gun.I only have enough room to do 100 yard accuracy tests, but it'll shoot sub 1 inch groups with my handloads.I did shoot some pop-ups at 500 yards and it'll knock them down as fast as you can pull the trigger. At the time I got mine,it was about $1000.00 They are probably a little higher now,but they are well worth the money.

Re: AR10 choices

I think you can get close with the Armalite. Mine shoots great with a factory upper. I probably have a bit more than $1500 into it with the PRS stock and a Giessele trigger but the darned thing shoots great. Call them ... they were great to deal with!

Re: AR10 choices

DPMS/Fulton are both at least as good as Armalite, and you will have better access to mags/parts/barrels with that platform.

Re: AR10 choices

2008 I shot AR-10 .308 upper and a .260 upper for NRA across the course and long range. If you're going to go the AR-10 route for 1000yd work go .260. When I started I thought the gas gun would be as good as any bolt gun. Well I've learned that if you're serious about Long Range bolt gun is the better option, unless your in the situation where you need a quick follow up shot. If you're going AR-10 and want factory go the DPMS route with .260.

Re: AR10 choices

Thanks for the replies. I purchesed a Sun Devil DPMS pattern lower and I have on order a Fulton Armory 24in Criterion 6.5 creedmoor upper. I will post when I get it shooting.

Re: AR10 choices

Heman,

What was your expirence shooting the 308 across the course?

Ya, ya, i know its got more recoil than the 17lb 556 ARs everyone else shoots, but both rifles are accurate, and the fact that you can shoot higher BC bullets at a decent velocity would seem to give the edge to the 308, but this is all "on paper"

To the OP, sorry for the thread hijack
