How many rounds does it truly take to break in a spanking' virgin SS barrel and how many rounds does it take for the groupings to start getting tighter. Sot 100 rounds off my new Noveske SPR with some 75 Hornady bthp and could not get a grouping smaller that 1.2 inch @ 100 . Used the same ammo on my go to Daniel Defense with just an ACOG and got .6 of an inch. Thanks in advance folks.

Re: How many rounds does it take.

For a hand lapped match barrel, it should be shooting well from its first shot to its last shot. Check your screws and mounts, barrel nut, different ammo, etc.

Re: How many rounds does it take.

Got some 77 SMKs and 69's from southwest ammunition on route i hope it just didn't like the Hornady.

Re: How many rounds does it take.

Try out different bullets. Some barrels like certain bullets over others. Your barrel may just not like the hornadys.

Re: How many rounds does it take.

I called LMT about accuracy problem with my brand new MWS.Asked about break in theory. They said they no break in n required just use good ammo. They fire 100 rounds before it's shipped snd to just re-torque the barrel which I did.

Re: How many rounds does it take.

I'm not even going to shot it till I get my ammo from Southwest. It could be just a simple as it doesn't like the 75 Hornady, even though every other Noveske SPR owner has had great luck with that ammo.

Re: How many rounds does it take.

Have you tried shooting 1 ten shot group or 2 five shot groups from each batch of ammo on the same day? If you can consistently shoot .6th ten shot groups out of your DD I would say your Noveske doesn't like the 75's.

OP I really think you need to start at the muzzle and go back, something is wrong on your rifle.

Re: How many rounds does it take.

I tried the shoot one, clean, shoot one, clean, ritual with my L-W SS .260 barrel. There was no detectable copper after the seventh shot, so I no longer bother doing such activities with a honed premium bore. Most factory bores aren't honed and can probably profit from more frequent than average cleaning during the first 100-200rd

There is some reasonable argument that the throating process leaves some sharper edges that are better after some wear, but I don't think there's much point to deliberately going after such.

I would give any new premium barrel about 100rd before trying to do definitive load development. If an accuracy node is a moving target early on in the barrel's life, it should have settled down by then. As said above, the rest of the rifle can probabably use some working in, too.

Re: How many rounds does it take.

I have found all my barrels have their own personality and take different amounts to find their sweet spot and hit their stride. Just keep trying different things.

Re: How many rounds does it take.

yocan, being new, it might be better to read a little more carefully. I was specifically responding to the guy with the LMT....

"I called LMT about accuracy problem with my brand new MWS.Asked about break in theory. They said they no break in n required just use good ammo. They fire 100 rounds before it's shipped snd to just re-torque the barrel which I did."

I do not see anywhere in his post he indicated his LMT has the stainless barell and in my opinion the more common mws is the chromelined version. Which I would say is likely pointless for the CL barrel.
