Looking to make a dream (my dream) tac rifle. Starting with a Stiller Tac-30. Already have it, thank ya Jerry especially your willingness to help us lefties out! I'm going 308 as I have a decent supply from work, lots of experience reloading it, and my effective ranges will be 500 yards and in and most often 300 yards and in. Barrel life is also a plus! These are the only parts I'm 100%

Was thinking Jewell for the trigger. I have a few of them on hunting rigs and love them. Any reason not to go with a Jewell?? Anything "better" I'm missing?

Barrel, I'm prone to Hart as I have at leasy half a dozen and all have been fantastic in lots of different calibers. 1/2 Heavy was my thought with recessed target crown.

I have thoughts on twist and barrel length but would like to hear what you have to say....90% I will be shooting 168/175SMK. Would like to be able to shoot some of the heavies once in a while and will probably look to 165gr TSX as my barrier bullet.

Chamber? How tight to go???

Stock...seriously looking at McMillian A-5. Also thinking Badger bottom/magazine.

Just as importat....color combo!! Am going to have a friend cerakote all metal....not even close to a decision on color or pattern.

Already have optics -- Nightforce NSX w NF rings.

Any adivce is welcomes and appreciated. Thanks!!!

Re: Help With My Build

Stock wise, I would also consider a Manners, someone correct me if I am wrong, but the Manners T4 would be a good contender that is ergonomically similar to a McMillan A5. Really, both are great stocks, it just comes down to which one fits you best.

Re: Help With My Build

I prefer the Macs because I like the molded in color. The Manners are painted.

Harts are great. You can't go wrong with a Hart. I would say a 1-11 twist would be perfect for your bullet range.

I wouldn't go fancy with the chamber. Just a standard reamer should do fine. You never know when you might need to shoot factory.

After going OD, Black, Brown, I think I like the prodominately tan color schemes the best. I think that they are the most versitile. If you look at camo like Realtree, Advantage, you see a prodominance of tan in most patterns. I read in an article that most camo patterns are actually too dark. You are more likely to have a color contrast going to dark than too light. But that is just my opinion.

Not all. They have molded in camo patterns and solid as well.

Re: Help With My Build

Mcmillan A-5's are great, but Manners are also very good, especially the T4-A. Get a Surgeon DBM and don't look back, they are much better than the Badger.

Re: Help With My Build

No reason not to go with the Jewel. I have seen a few break under hard use, but they were taken care of pretty quickly. I run one rifle with a Jewel and another with a Shilen. The Shilen isn't a nice as the Jewel, but I feel that it's more bullet proof and I'm only saying that because I've never broken one.

Still, I prefer the Jewel for precision shooting.

As for the chamber, I've had one cut for Federal 168gr GMM and another for Federal 175gr GMM. I had my guy cut them so that the bullet would be kissing the lands when loaded to spec OAL. Mine is also pretty tight, although it will chamber factory loaded rounds. I've never been able to chamber brass fired out of a factory rifle. I like it a bit tight. I'm getting really good case life, because when I resize the only thing I'm really doing is resizing the neck and bumping the shoulder a bit and I'm using full length sizing dies.

Going with this type of cut on the chamber also got me another 100 fps over the last stock barrel that I was shooting.

Re: Help With My Build

Jewell hvr, I have a lrp 308 built with a rock 11.25 twist 5r. my chamber was cut with the bisley match reamer. my rifle shoots the 175gold metal match very well and I started loading the berger hybrid taget 155s and it is a lazer. I get to 1000 with 8.4 mils with the 155s. the barrel finished at 24". A 20" rifle is nice but there is not much difference in the 24" and you wont give up so much mv. with the bisley match chamber you can still get to the lands for the vld's and keep them in the mag. I have the a5 on in and love it. I also used the surgeon bottom metal and I like it better that the badger because I can jam it up on a baricade without pushing on the mag.

Re: Help With My Build

The second sentence of Tony Angel's post sounds like a good reason not to buy a Jewel.
