I am getting my Sako switched to a 260. I am thinking about keeping the barrel and getting a action wrench and barrel vise. How hard is it the switch back and forth from barrel to barrel?

Re: Sako Barrel switch??

You could just buy my sako already barreled in 260

Re: Sako Barrel switch??

You could have your existing barrel altered, buy a 260 prefit barrel, headspace gauges and a couple other parts/tools and switch barrels like a Savage does.

Re: Sako Barrel switch??

I am building a switch barrel Sako for a customer as we speak. Piece of cake to swap barrels. 15 minutes and you are good to go.

Re: Sako Barrel switch??

It's not quite as easy as the AI, you'll have to actually send your rifle in for the new barrel to be fitted. After that it's easy. Tell the smith fitting the new barrel not to get too crazy on the barrel torque, 100ft-lbs is fine.

If your Sako is a TRG, you can use our wrench and swap out barrels without taking the whole thing apart. If you have a Sako 85 or another, you'll have to find a wrench or make one, and most likely will have to pull it out of the stock to swap it.

So Justin, since I'm running 2 M995s and have all 3 bolt face sizes, I would just need to make sure the barrel is spaced to the right bolt by my smith and then I'd be gtg changing the barrels out myself moving forward? (Keeping the barrel with the M995 receiver it was mated to)

It was just a thought, I already have a .308. I am also thinking about just selling the barrel to. I am just looking at all my options.

Re: Sako Barrel switch??

Layton, that is correct, the key being keep the barrel with the action to which it was fitted. Now, if you have a depth micrometer and can measure precisely the distance from the face of each action to the lug abutments in the action, and if that measurement is around .001" or so then you might be able to swap barrels and actions/bolts at will. Of course you should still double check headspace.

Scott if you can get a TRG with the factory .260 barrel that would be neat to have just in itself.

Benchrest shooters switch barrels all the time as they move from 10.5 to 13.5 pounds and back again.

Your only problem is that you have a Sako action. *If* it's the same size as a Remington you'll be able to buy an action wrench. Check out Sinclair's International: http://www.sinclairintl.com/.aspx/pid=36311/Product/Davidson-Action-Wrenches

Wrenches are available for all common benchrest actions. You'd have to call Sinclair's to find out if your Sako action is the same as a (right only) Remington action. I think there's a good chance it is. Barrel vises are also available from Sinclair's.
