Gunsmithing 40X stock question

I wanted to go with something different that had sort of an old look to it. Anyway, I picked up a beaten 40X stock from Numrich's and a worn floorplate from an old Model 7 (I think). Now I want to inlet the stock for the metal, and plan to eventually have the mag spring mounted to the other side of the plate. I had a solid chunk of Al machined to match the buttplate. I hope to eventually get the barreled action, buttplate, and bottom metal OD, and the stock a really dark walnut color. Do you fellas have any suggestions prior to me taking a chisel set and Dremel to the stock? I did buy 3, in the extremely likely event I screw it up.

Re: 40X stock question

I forgot to mention that I will have to put some wood filler between the plate and the rail cutout. I will eventually trim the rail to a U-shape where it meets the plate. I will probably give it a go next weekend barring any warnings from you guys. Pictures will be up shortly thereafter.

Re: 40X stock question

If you plan on using the Model 7 floorplate on a short 700 action it tain't gonna work. The Model 7 is about 1/4" shorter than a 700 short. Just FYI.

Re: 40X stock question

The stock is an ADL, so the only cut is for a long rail (i.e. No metal inletting is done yet). The bipod rail slot runs fromt the triggerguard to just a few inches short of the end of the stock.

Re: 40X stock question

I have one of these I am getting ready to send off to CDI for the metal cut. Plan is to have the rail in place and cut when the inlet is cut so it just turns from the rail into the bottom metal. Should look pretty slick when completed just need the ambition to send it to them.
