Ruger 10/22 Basic Questions/ Help

I have a few basic questions for folks that have a Ruger 10/22 rifle.

1) If any folks have had the standard factory synthetic stock, does the buttplate come off or flip up or something? It sure looks like it should I just can't figure out how to do it.

2) Barrel Break-in- Saw the youtube vid some one posted up on another forum: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LitGDerYR...mp;feature=plcp

This is a stupid question, but it always confuses the hell out of me- does he mean breakin will take a total of 200 rounds? Or 320?
Or should I do as with an AR and just shoot the thing?
The .22 I currently use was bought used, so I've never had to do a break-in on one.

3)Tech Sights- a lot of folks with the 10/22s have, or recommend these. I have seen them, but are they any good, quality wise?

For the record this will just be a basic marksmanship trainer/plinker/squirrel terrorizer:D. I intend to use Ruger BX-25 mags, or standard 10-rounders.
I'm not planning on going super crazy on upgrading this- basically shoot it until something breaks, then worry about it.
If any of the above questions have previously been beat to death, my aplogies- feel free to link any other pertinent threads.

I will eventually be checking out RimfireCentral. But as I haven't signed up yet and can't search their site, I really didn't feel like browsing through endless threads for a few simple questions.

Re: Ruger 10/22 Basic Questions/ Help

1) no clue
2) shoot it
3) they're a quality product and 100x better than factory sights

Re: Ruger 10/22 Basic Questions/ Help

1- No clue.
2- Shoot it with every type of ammo you can to see what works best for your barrel.
3- No clue.

Oh, indeed- it will be easy.

(Not)

Seriously though, the only real longterm upgrade I'm plannning on is a different stock, as this factory one kind of sucks (IE, whatever moron decided to square off the butt right where your cheek rests deserves a swift kick...).

Other than that, just a matter of deciding where I want to go with sights (hence the Tech Sight question) or an optic. Maybe a better bolt release if I just get fed up with the factory operation.
Aside from that, I really don't see the point as this isn't going to be a super-special precision rifle that I'd pull out all the stops to get just so.
And I've never been a huge fan of playing dress-up either.
Right now I'm just more worried about screwing up the barrel.

Now if you can convince me other wise....

Do the auto bolt release mod yourself... takes 10 minutes.

Where can I find instructions for doing it correctly?

Re: Ruger 10/22 Basic Questions/ Help

1.} No Clue, but why worry about it .
2.}Never worried about BB on a .22. Buy a bunch of different ammo and see what your 10/22 likes.
3.} Tech sights are second rate compared to NODAK SPUD's, Tech's are made in Taiwan, Nodaks are USA MADE.

I have had both and am now running Nodak's on my Appleseed rifle.

You don't worry about it - just take out the tip shape adn leave it slightly rounded towards the top.

If you screw up completely and totally ruin it, well, you were gonna buy a new one anyway...

On your third thing - if you just want to practice w/ irons, the Nodak Spuds will work well. If you want to have FUN with the gun and really terrorize squirrels, for the same price of the Nodaks you can get a decent (cheap) red-dot sight that will work well with the rifle. I went that route with mine, and is more fun to shoot than any other gun I have.

I put it in a "tactical" ATI Strikeforce stock. It's comparable to the Tapco but folding. Not a bad piece for 70 bucks.

GL and have fun.

Re: Ruger 10/22 Basic Questions/ Help

Well, I figure I'll just update this thread instead of starting a new one just to complain.

Approx two months and 1k+ rounds later....

1) The stock irons on this thing SUCK!
Not only did the front sight self destruct almost immediately through no fault of my own, but it's also actually to big!
I just went to an Appleseed with this rifle, and once you get to the 3 and 4 hundred yard targets, you are screwed because the front sight covers the whole thing!
And I opted for a model with glowey sights thinking "oh, fiber optic[?] sights- these should work great for visibility"... NOT.
I am an idiot.
mad.gif
But at least I didn't pay extra for it.

Not only that, but being old style sights mounted to the barrel, they're a little TO low to be comfortable in certain positions- which brings me to my next peeve:

2) The stock stock REALLY sucks!
Seriously, who the hell thought this thing up? First, you have this retarded flat spot that seems to start right where your face rests (more on this later) and then this needless and unendingly annoying curve in the butt. Oh, it's not so bad standing or kneeling, but sitting and especially prone it is infuriating! You literally cannot get a correct position with it prone, without practically laying on top of the thing with the upper curve digging into your shoulder.
Of course it doesn't help that that irons are mounted to the barrel and really to low, so on top of the contortions I just described you're having to also pretty much jam your face into the stock to line the sights up effectively, which causes that F***ing flat spot to dig into your jaw, which after two days really starts to suck.
And because of that stupid flat spot, the comb is to low to use the rail piece they SO thoughfully provided for you, to mount a scope to nullify the accursed sights!

I know this all probably sounds a little overblown, but I set it down next to a Marlin M-60 I have used extensively with its original stock, and the Ruger's stock is seriously wack.
I wish I had got a wood stock version instead of the synthetic, because I have access to enough tools to fix (most of) it...

3) Random findings:
The BX-25s seem to be good, and fun to shoot with, however they are not very useful once you get into slung positional shooting, as they do not drop free like the standard 10-rd mags do.
As far as the bolt release- comparing between the two types, I don't forsee a problem with me continueing to use the standard release- seeing as how this gun doesn't lock back on an empty mag anyway, 90% of the time I'm just inserting a new mag and racking the bolt. I don't have a problem loading from lock-back even under time constraints-I just hold the bolt back with my thumb, press the release with my trigger finger, and then release the bolt- works just fine 9 of 10 times.

On the bright side, I have not yet had a FTF or FTE. Which is a HUGE improvement over the old Marlin.

Anway, I just wanted to post my findings, namely to vent, but also for anyone else new to a 10/22 who is havng the same frustrations.

I will probably be trying the Tech sights- I know they're not AS good as the NOdaks, but I am on a very strict budget right now, and I am not hearing of enough issues to totally freak me out. I may also grab some foam laying around and see if I can rig up a bubba fix for the stock. OR maybe even pick up a wood one....

If that stuff doesn't work out, I think I am going to have to seriously re-evaluate either going full out pimp-my-.22 on this thing, or re-investing in a S&W 15-22 or similar.

Re: Ruger 10/22 Basic Questions/ Help

I really like the Tech Sights. I got the TSR 200, but if I could do it again, I would get the 100. With the 200, to be on at 50 yards, the front sight has to be almost all the way out.

Re: Ruger 10/22 Basic Questions/ Help

1) No clue.
2) Just shoot the thing. It came used, so break-in is a moot point. Just point and click.
3) Dear God, Yes. Tech Sights are, in my mind, an absolute necessity. I had little faith in them until I tried some on my friends Ruger after he replaced his factory sights. We stick within 2" at 50 yds fucking around, and 4" at 100. Just slung, not calling wind, and burning a mag faster than the other person can reload it. I cannot imagine going back to the original sights after.

Re: Ruger 10/22 Basic Questions/ Help

I promise this will be the last time I dredge this lame thread back up, but I wanted to give a final update for closure.

I settled for the Tech sights (TSR 100)- so far so good. They seem to be working fine, and also seem to be a little better made than I had thought.
The only thing I don't like is how far up you have to turn the front sight to zero @ 25 yards.
Other than that, I nearly cried at how much better they are than the awful factory sights.
Which is funny, because a few years back when I first started shooting I hated aperture sights. Now I can't see having any other type of irons. But I digress...

I could stand it no longer, so I changed out the demonic factory stock. After looking at the factory wood stocks, I decided to just suck it up and get something better- so I picked up a Boyds Tacticool. I had seen quite a few of these around here and liked the look which I guesstimated would also fit me well, and when I found Midway had the basic unfinished version for $80 I could not say no.
There are a couple slight issues (to be addressed in a forthcoming thread- aren't you guys lucky to have me here?
grin.gif
) but I rigged up a temporary fix to make it immediately usable, and is is most wonderful. Literally about 300 times better than the factory abomination.
The fit, dimensions, and weight distribution are all just about perfect for me, and I had absolutely no problems shooting in any position. And it comes with sling mounts!

The setup worked well enough that this past weekend at another Appleseed I finally made Rifleman.
In all fairness I didn't get quite the score I wanted, but I shot a qualifying score twice that day, so I'm happy enough.

**Yes, there is some plastic wrapped around the stock- as it is unfinished, I wanted to protect it at least a little bit so it didn't get totally destroyed before being finished.
