Over the last year I've had several members PM me about their desire to shoot their first tactical rifle match. Often guys think that a tactical shooting match is a higher event stress than it really is. There's a reason why I shoot tactical rifle matches, simply put....It's a damn good time! Everyone I've ever come across at a match is pleasant, helpful, fun to be around and obviously they share a love of guns. The experienced guys, the names you see at the top of a lot of matches, they enjoy helping out the new guys. There's no us and them, no trying to sabotage one another, this sport is FILLED with good people who enjoy shooting with one another.

So what's this post about really? Well it's about my first SH video, lol. Instead of typing and typing, I thought I'd throw together a quick video to help members who want to shoot their first match. Often the questions from the new guys are about what they really need to shoot a match. You'll be happy to know that it's really much less stuff than you'd think. Now I'm a gear whore, there's no denying it, but you don't need all the bells and whistles to shoot your first match. You need a fairly accurate rifle and some other simple things; the rest you can do without or ask other competitors about using theirs.

So, here it is, the jasonk video about what gear you really need to shoot a match. This video will probably make the veterans go to sleep, but I hope the new guys find it useful. The one thing I know I forgot to mention is the shooting mat. Great for practice, never used in matches, leave it at home. Other items not needed here in the NW much, but you may want them is sunscreen and bug spray.

Feel free to ask questions here or PM me if you're shy, I'm happy to help. Make fun of my video and I'll ban you

but you're welcome to offer helpful comments. I plan to do another video soon, something about what to expect at your first match, different shooting scenarios, etc.

Thanks for watching....and sorry it's so long, I tried not to babble.

Pack - Triple Aught Design FAST Pack
Mat & Sling - TAB Gear
Bipod - Harris Swivel, notched legs
Rear bag - I think that one is from Str8Laced

Weather station - Kestrel 4500NV w/ Horus Atrag
Mag pouch - Triad Tactical
Jacket on me - Triple Aught Design - Stealth LT (best jacket ever)

Re: Shooting your first match? Match Gear Needs- Video

Thanks, Gents. Couldn't work the Cup into this year's schedule, truly sad for me, but next year for sure. Just got back from Louisiana and my wife and I have a busy summer schedule.

Jason,
That was a great video!
Terrific information for someone considering shooting their first match!
Thanks for making that video to help out those new to our sport.

Re: Shooting your first match? Match Gear Needs- Video

I must say, rookies such as me can tell you, you are so right about the veterans being helpful. I have been to the range on several occations and have been in ONE match. Seemed to go out of their way to be helpful and advise you on what to do in any situation.
Some of us are a little hesitant to ask question for fear of looking stupid. Info like this is helpful for the simple stuff.
Thanks for the post.

A guy buys one case of pop tarts and he never hears the end of it!! Look at me, I'd have blown away in that Texas wind without them!!

Re: Shooting your first match? Match Gear Needs- Video

LOL! Great video buddy. Is that a Terrapin in the rangefinder case? If so, did it come with the case?

Re: Shooting your first match? Match Gear Needs- Video

Thanks for doing this. Would be great to have a list break down from some other experienced guys as well. Going to be replaying this a few.

Re: Shooting your first match? Match Gear Needs- Video

If you guys want to get one of the wrist dope card holders get one from SunnySide Tactical Supply. His user name here on the hide is sunnysidescott. They are really nice!

Jason, where did you get your "shemahs"? I have been looking for a couple but have come up empty.

Re: Shooting your first match? Match Gear Needs- Video

Make this a Sticky!

Re: Shooting your first match? Match Gear Needs- Video

Thanks a ton for putting together this post for us newer shooters who are planning on tackling our first tactical comp. I plan to shoot in my first comp up in S. Dakota in September. I will have to travel a good distance and can't afford to be without any necessities, which until now I was not all that certain what I might need. Thanks again.

Re: Shooting your first match? Match Gear Needs- Video

Great video.

I'll also add some a few more "nice to haves":
- paracord
- folding knife or multitool
- Borka tool or similar torque wrench.
- extra batteries
- boresnake

Re: Shooting your first match? Match Gear Needs- Video

Thank you very much for the info, and no you did not babble at all. Please make more videos and share your wisdom.

Re: Shooting your first match? Match Gear Needs- Video

Thanks for all the kind comments. Have plans for another video, maybe get a chance to shoot it next weekend, will be along the same "Beginner match" theme.

Re: Shooting your first match? Match Gear Needs- Video

Thanks Jason. This type of video is perfect for me. Great info!

Re: Shooting your first match? Match Gear Needs- Video

I pretty much carry the same things but in addition this Borka kit. I have just about every common bit and attachment method for an AI rifle and a variety of scopes and mount types. I also carry a in-lb to newton meters conversion sheet and a small printout of the AI factory torque specs. While I've only had to use it once at a match, i've found myself using it pretty regularly in practice and whatever. Very handy little setup as it rolls up to be about 5" long, 3.5" wide, and about 1.5" thick. Not bad for a complete scope mounting and general purpose tool kit.

Re: Shooting your first match? Match Gear Needs- Video

Came out great Jason !
Very down to earth and should help relieve any stress anyone has about needing tons of new gear for a match.
