I have seen some Mosin HB projects posted ,so here's mine. It started as a parts gun with sewer pipe for a barrel. The new barrel is a uk59 machine gun barrel, which screwed right on and timed perfectly . The scope mount is a Rock Solid along with the bolt handle. The stock is a new A. Henderson design L96. The rings are weaver tactical 30mm low. The scope is a Konus M30 4-16x40. The paint job was a quickie just to add some color. The first picture is with medium rings that sat too high.

Re: My modern mosin

Very nice. How much did all the gun smithing cost you??? I have been wanting to get a .308 blank and have it chambered, & installed w/ opened up rifling but i don't want to have to pay an arm and a leg. Also, how much did you pay for the stock? I'm assuming everything from lowell designs is special order?

Re: My modern mosin

Thanks, I did all the work. I bought a set of head space gauges and went to work. The stock was around 180$ I think. I saw Mcgowan barrels has a 7.62x54r barrel on their website, so Iam planning another build using one of their barrels.

Re: My modern mosin

the bore is .311. The barrel is from a russian heavy machine gun. Mine seems to prefer 176 and higher grain surplus ammo.

Re: My modern mosin

makes sense, there a few .311 gr bullets available but mostly with lead nose if you wanted to reload for it.
congrats on a nice MN

Re: My modern mosin

I want to do this....yesterday.. I have two mosins with shit barrels and canted sights....

I just need a step by step and where to find the parts....

Man I like that ......

Re: My modern mosin

Very nice build.

There are those that will bitch about not leaving it in it's original condition and configuration. I think you did it right by taking a rifle that was marginal at best and giving it a new life.

Did you crown the barrel or did it come that way? It reminds me of the crown on my Biathlon basic.

Have fun and enjoy.

Re: My modern mosin

Tallshot, I got the barrel over a year ago from classic arms, but they have been sold out for months now. Mcgowan barrels makes a blank chambered in 7.62x54r, but I dont know if they can thread it for a mosin. The other option is a Teludyne straight jacket some people have had real good results. They use a heavy sleeve that attaches to the barrel and has a threaded brake. Here is a youtube link of a mosin with the straight jacket.

Re: My modern mosin

Eclipse57, that is crown it came with. I have so much surplus 54r ammo I just wanted something different to use some of it up with. I have built a few sporters out of parts guns that turned into good shooters instead of wall hangers, like the one pictured below I bought it with a broken stock and missing the trigger and turned it into this a few years ago.

This one I built the stock for and made my own scope mount. I had to cut the barrel back to 20inches just to get rid of the severe rust and terrible counter bore it went from 8 inch 5 shot groups at 100 yds to just under 2inches with surplus ammo.It went to a family member who takes good care of it now.

Re: My modern mosin

can u slug the barrel?? Also, where do you live, cause i'm gonna need help on my mosin project!!

How did you go about timing the bbl? I found it odd, I bought 2 barrels from Classic Arms and they both had a strange notch cut out on the opposite side of the extractor cut. Did you have one like it? I am thinking it was something for the UK59 quick release changes but I am not really sure tbh

Re: My modern mosin

I got really lucky the barrel screwed right on and the extractor cut lined up nice. I just kept tightening it slightly and checking the headspace till it was exactly where I wanted it. Mine has the same notch across from the extractor groove. Iam not real sure what it is for either, But it made me nervous when you put the rimmed cartridge in the chamber and see just how little contact it actually makes with the chamber face because of that notch. So after reading several web boards I went ahead and finished it. Alot of people smarter than me say that lack of contact and loose chamber ( machine gun) is why you get the slight expansion in the case neck of the spent cartridge after firing the round. I took mine to a gunsmith to check my work before I would fire it.

Re: My modern mosin

I dont have any way to slug the barrel. Range report would be very promising with surplus ammo and the fact that Iam getting over pneumonia so I couldnt breathe well. Groups were around 1 inch or a little better at 100yds with different surplus including czech silvertips 148grn I think. But there wasn't any stringing like the lighter barrel and lot less flyers.

Iam from Ohio

Very cool. I have no pics, but my father did a similar build and it turned out to be a tremendous success. Under 1 MOA when you do your part (using surplus ammo!) and it is cheap ta boot. He threw an HS Precision stock on it originally made for a Remington 700. You'd be surprised how similar the actions are.

A lot of people don't even believe it's a Mosin when looking at it. Quite entertaining to hear people comment on a heavy barreled Mosin. Looks good man.
