my buddy is looking for a do all type gun. i said a 308 and dont look back. He wants a deer rifle and a accurate target rifle up to 1k. like i said kind of a do all cartrige. Anyone thinking of another caliber im not thinking of?

260Rem. It is a great deer caliber and will out shoot a 308 with less recoil.

There are a lot of cartridges that fit your bill, I would personally go with the 7mm-08, great variety in bullet weights and good for any north american game.

how tempramental are both those as far as reloading. the 308 is a very easy to reload and seems to like whatever you feed it!

Both the 260 and 7mm-08 ought to be easy to reload for, they are both based off the 308 parent case after all, just necked down. They are a bit more expensive to buy factory ammo for, and their components are harder to find, but you can always just neck down a 308 case (just make sure its not something like LC brass that requires neck turning). If you reload, both the 260 and 7mm-08 are better choices than the 308, both offer less recoil, less wind drift and less drop, you can't go wrong with either.

i reload most anything both those would be new to me and my buddy is picking up the new hobby so i have the feeling i would be loading for him till he feels comfortable doing so. Thanks for the advice!

I recommend looking at load data for the two cartridges in reloading manuals as well as here to get an idea as to the numbers you would be looking at. Both rounds are great for beginners since they offer less recoil than the 308, makes shooting much more enjoyable.

6.5 creedmoor. Relatively reasonably priced 140gr AMAX for target shooting to start with before he reloads. Looading recipe is on the box. Keep the fired brass and reload 140gr Berger hunting bullets for deer. Less wind drift and drop than 308win with more retained velocity especially at further distances.

308 260 or the 7mm08. I have the 308 and the 260, the 260 has much less recoil. Not as fatiguing to shoot. Personally I think a 7mm08 is one of the best. If I had to have one gun it would be 308 but the 7mm08 is next on the list.
