i want to get a 338 lapua mag i have a buget of around 2500 but could go over that my only thing that i have to have is the barrel has to have a twist rate of 1:10 any ideas?

Re: help!!! i want a 338

338 lapua is a awesome round but be advised unless you reload factory ammo is approx 90 dollars a box of 20. Im sure prices have changed plus or minus the 90 dollars i mentioned. But basically the 338 LM can be a costly round.

Re: help!!! i want a 338

I'm about to start loading for one and it's still gonna be $2 a pull or close to it.

Re: help!!! i want a 338

remington 700 police i would stay away from the savage 338s everyone we have sold at the shop had to be sent back for warranty because they would not extract fired cases

Re: help!!! i want a 338

I know a guy thats got a Savage 110 for $1500

Re: help!!! i want a 338

The Savage seems to be OK if you stay with Lapua Brass. I was looking at the Savage FCP HS but found a great deal on a Sako TRG.. The Remmy XCR is another one to look at as well.. Bang for the buck the Savage is gonna be hard to beat.. As stated factory ammo is gonna run you around 75.00 or so a box of 20 and even reloading is going to approach 2.00 a round.. IF you want a 338 get it. It is your money and you do not have to justify it to anyone but yourself.. I am saying this because there will be some posters coming along telling you that unless you shoot 1500+ yards you do not need it or the old $5.00 a round BS..

I met a guy at the range earlier this year with this problem on his 338 Savage. I told him to take back for a warranty look over.

Re: help!!! i want a 338

with a 2500 budget another chambering is going to make more sense - like a 300 win mag - a good hard hitting distance round

if you are going to get the full advantages of a 338 think more like a total of 6000 +or- (probably +)

optics, mounts, bipod, rangefinder, ballistic calculator, weather monitor, different reloading equipment and supplies( a few of the items I have added/upgraded with the 338) - there is a lot more to fully utilizing the performance of a 338 than just the rifle

Re: help!!! i want a 338

If you are going to reload why not go with the 338 Edge. It is still kinda new but seems to be a great round. Brass is MUCH cheaper because you are using 300RUM brass and it has equal or better performance than the Lapua.

My advice is don't dive into it until you have about double to triple that set aside. You can get a great gun for ~2500-2600 in a SAKO TRG, but you will need to spend about that much if not more on glass, and your reloading supplies will run you quite a bit. Assuming you have a press, you will still need brass which is insane right now, as well as projos and powders, all of which are not cheap at the momemt. Even reloading with cheap (relatively speaking) hornady brass, I'm into this for about $1.60 per shot.

Not to pee in your Cheerios, but keep in mind that beyond your <span style="font-style: italic">"budget of around $2,500.00"</span> you still have to feed it, and even if reloading feeding a .338LM on a regular basis will still eat piles of cash.

Re: help!!! i want a 338

it does sound like i will need to up my budget, but here is my next ?....if im going to spend over 4000+ give or take, will it be better to do a custom build or buy it out right from AI or something around those lines?

Re: help!!! i want a 338

im not worried about cost of ammo i just want to get started with a solid platform i have been wanting a 338 for i while

Re: help!!! i want a 338

TRG42 and be done with it. You'll be happy and won't have any regrets either way.

Re: help!!! i want a 338

Maybe it would be good to do a custom job, that way you dont have to replace parts later.

Peronsally I'd like a Surgeons Action, Krieger barrel, Timney trigger and AICS stock. Toss on a Badger Ordnance Rail, Seekings rings and my SWFA 5-20x50
smile.gif

Maybe a suppressor on the end of it so I don't have to buy a new shoulder.

I think the base rifle would fall under your budget too.

Re: help!!! i want a 338

Do a lot of research and a lot of thinking. And buy or build what ever is going to make "YOU HAPPY"because that's all that counts.I did and that's why i am going with a custom 338 Norma.

+1. That's what I'm doing. I just suggest a TRG as everyone seems to like em and they are pretty damn good right out of the box so you could spend your efforts getting stuff together in other areas.

Re: help!!! i want a 338

You cannot go wrong with the TRG. Yes, they are expensive initially and the Sako accessories are kindof high considering but everything is TOP SHELF stuff. Yes the BiPod is stupid priced but it works and works very well. The brake is very effective and the way the ports are set up you can rotate it slightly to stop the left or right jump off target. You will not, in my opinion, find a better trigger PERIOD!.. I have been out shooting and had three others sit down and shoot it and POI was the same as mine. Plus they all commented on how the stock fit them so well and felt "Right"..

Re: help!!! i want a 338

Paid $1,215 for my .338 Savage HS Precision minus scope, base, rings...Holding 3/4 MOA at the moment still load developing and learning how to tame the beast when she goes bang. If you do go with a Savage make sure to use Lapua brass, my buddies TRG42 isn't as picky about brass but runs the good stuff anyway.

Re: help!!! i want a 338

I took a chance and went with the Savage. I was going to go with a custom build. Glad I didn't. Mine even works with Nosler brass

Supermag, how often do you have to resize and trim? Trying to gauge how soft their brass is...

Re: help!!! i want a 338

WOW, you are picking a nice rat hole to throw money down. Don't get me wrong, there is something seriously sexy about a .338LM and I had been lusting after one for quite a while. You need to be very aware of what you are setting yourself up for.

I have a Remington 700P MLR that only cost me $1069.00 NIB, but that was only the beginning of my .338LM quest. I had been looking at one for about a year as a lower cost way get in on the .388LM and then stumbled on a serious deal on one. Those same rifles are now going for anywhere between $1500.00 to $2000.00 now.

New bolt knob install - $110.00 (Don't like Remington bolt knobs)
New Precision Armament M41 Severe-Duty™ Muzzle Brake, self install - $120.00 (factory one just sucks, went this route so I did not have to have it sent out and timed, just ordered this week so will post opinions on it later)
Atlas bipod and rail - $300.00
New trigger in the future - $120.00 (probably a Timney)
Scope mount - $140.00
Spuhr 34mm Picatinny Mount - $400.00
Spuhr QD ACI mount - $120.00
Milspec ACI - 140.00
Leupold 6.5-20x50mm ER/T M5 Locking Adjustment with TMR reticle - $1500.00 (I know, blasphemy to not buy a Nightforce, S&B, or Vortex on this site but I got a good deal and it is a really nice scope, there are times that I kind of wish I had got it with the Horus H-58, but I have a hard time swallowing a $450.00 reticle)
Magazines - $125.00 each (there may be a cheaper source but I have yet to find it)

That was just to get the gun setup the way I liked it and it is more accurate than I can shoot it. I personally don't have any dislikes about the stock, so I am not going to upgrade that at all (I figure that if I decide to upgrade the stock later on then I would just sell the thing and buy a new rifle like the TG-42). If I do decide to sell at a later date then I figure I would not loose money on the rifle, might even make some.

Now to feed the thing:
Dies, shellholders and bushings: call it $350.00 to $400.00 for the top of the line Redding dies.
Assuming that you already have all the necessary tools to reload, then Lapua brass is going to cost $250.00 to $300.00 per hundred. Hornady is cheaper but all the reviews that I read on their brass was not encouraging, so I bought 300 rounds of Lapua brass and do not regret it. Throw out the brass cost and reloading tool costs and the reloads cost about $2.00 to $2.50 a round depending on bullets, primers and powder.

Then you have the costs of all the other gear you are going to want to get for extreme long range shooting that you may or may not already have. Things like a Kestrel, good spotting scope and tripod, steel targets, shooting mats, bags etc. At least you can justify those items as useful for your other rifles.

Now I am not saying to not go with .338LM, but I think that your budget is awfully optimistic. Granted I did get some top shelf ancillary gear for mine, but I subscribe to the "buy once, cry once" philosophy. I think you need to allot about three times that amount. Given the issues that I have heard about concerning the Savage 338's and the cost of the new 700P MLR's, I would give a serious look at the TRG-42 as a factory option that is already tricked out right out of the box. It fits your budget for the rifle only, however once you buy one your are going to want to shoot it, so have the money set aside for everything before you buy.

I have been shooting/reloading for over 35 years and even with that amount of time and experience devoted to this "hobby", I was a little taken aback at the costs for me to shoot this rifle. On the plus side, I do really enjoy shooting it and do not regret it for an instant. Just my $0.02 so take it for what it is worth. If you really want one then by all means get one, you only live once and they are a hoot. Just tried to put it into perspective for you and relate my experience. Just don't let your wife find out or she may skin you alive unless she shoots also.

Re: help!!! i want a 338

From what I have seen the R700p model doesnt wanna group, 2 guys out at my range have em and they both have bought new barrels and had actions trued. I have read alot of reviews on the HS Savage 110 and heard alot of good things about them. Sako seams to be pretty popular for a factory .338

Re: help!!! i want a 338

the budget is only for the rifle platform by it self i pretty much have the rest of the nice toys that would go with it

Re: help!!! i want a 338

If your budget is between $3k-4k then IMHO the TRG would be a serious look and probably your best bet if you want to start shooting now since you have all the extras already.

Re: help!!! i want a 338

Current TRGs are 1:10. EUROPTIC has them listed for as low as $2800. The fixed stock is adjustable and most find them to be very comfortable. Stock fit is important to shooting well and this is particularly true as recoil increases. As already mentioned the TRG has an excellent trigger. The SAKO brake is very effective and simply spins on. It is a ground up purpose built rifle that needs no modification to shoot as it comes out of the box.

I bought mine because I came across what I thought to be an excellent deal. It is fully optioned and my original intent was to part it out. But of course, you can't have a .338LM and not shoot it. That was a beeeeg mistake. It now has a permanent spot in the safe.

The rifle is stupid accurate. I'm not going to put up numbers because I have no idea how to post pics and I know anyone would question the groups it consistently shoots. It also appears very forgiving in terms of reloading. The first load I tried just dropped them on top of each other. I then tried a load with a hunting bullet that did the same thing. That's been the total load development.

I don't know where some of numbers on cost for reloads come from. I bought one hundred once fired Lapua cases from a SH member for $160. Figuring I'll get five firings (which is conservative) my cost is $1.25 per round. That is with 250SMKs, H1000 and CCI #250s.

I have no experience with .338s fom AI, Remington, Savage or any custom maker so my experience is limited. That being said, by a TRG, scope it and start having fun.

Re: help!!! i want a 338

I broke down & bought my Savage 110FCP-HS.338 last month for $1200.00. I spent almost a year researching this rifle/caliber, and for the longest time, couldn't justify spending the that kind of money on ammo components. I decided last December to go custom Rem 700 in .300WM, and ordered a Rock Creek 30" 5R 1-10 blank, with the intention of pushing the Berger 230's to a mile. While waiting for my barrel, these .338 Savages have been showing up where I shoot 1k-1300. Frustrated by my 6+ month wait for my Rock, I caved for the 110. Only issue so far, aside from pricey components, has been the EGW mount. I read that mounts were coming loose under the heavy recoil, so I torqued mine down good, right out of the box. After 50+ rounds of unsuccessful load development & break in, I noticed yesterday that the massive NF NXS 5-22x56 was flopping around on the receiver. I took the EGW off, brake cleaned all the holes, and blue loktited the snot out of it. I'm going to upgrade to a 40moa Ken Farrel base.

Re: help!!! i want a 338

Go with the TRG. Starts at $2800 from Eurooptic. $300 over budget is not to bad for a tack driver. It's ready to shoot right out of the box. The action is smooth and the trigger is crisp. Quite possibly the best factory trigger on any gun.

Re: help!!! i want a 338

I've got a Savage 110 BA that I'm thrilled with. I paid around $1800 for it and almost that much for Nightforce glass to go on it. I've only been able to shoot it at 400 yrds so far but I plan to take it out much farther soon. The ammo is expensive as everyone has said and I didn't waste any time getting the dies to load it. Everyone has their different taste in weapons but the 110 BA seems to do okay for me. The recoil is about like a 308 but with the brake it has on it, it's LOUD!! I'm shooting a 250 gr SMK at about 2900 fps and it seems to stablize pretty well. As time goes by I may try some different loads but for now, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

Re: help!!! i want a 338

Two big selling points for me are the Accutrigger & the fact that quality drop-in barrels are available for the Savage. Aside from the weak one piece EGW mount & screws, I find the rifle to be an incredible value, and would buy it with a quickness, if it were chambered in a less expensive ammo caliber. I wanted to run a custom built .338 RUM, but I didn't think the Remmy brass would hold up.

Re: help!!! i want a 338

Just posted my 110BA in the for sale section $1,675.00 at that price you would have money for optics!

Re: help!!! i want a 338

You might as well get the Sake TRG42. Eurooptic can get you one and he is a hide sponsor.

I will say though, to justify owning such a powder burner, you better put quality glass on top, and shoot at a distance to warrant it.

I am currently awaiting my GAP 338 build and am already starting to buy reloading components, which are not cheap at all.

Now do not let me dissuade you, its a sexy caliber, which is why I have to have one. But I am only buying one becuase there are several places I can shoot it well past 1500 yds. After I sight this rifle in at 100 yds, shoot a few groups to brag, I will not shoot it at less than 1000 yds. It just costs to damn much to waste ammo. IF I wanted to shoot 100 yds I have plenty of other calibers for that.

Seriously though, get the Sako, be happy, don't look back, it'll be a great rifle for you.

Re: help!!! i want a 338

Get yourself a good custom action, a good match grade barrel, and chamber it in .338 Norma. I've got a Howa 1500 (not a custom action but still better than a standard Savage or Remington) with a Shilen barrel chambered in .338 Norma. I shot a 0.7" 3 round group at 310 yards the other day. I was just on a bipod and a rear bag. Robert Snyder (www.rwsgunsmithing.com) put it together for me. If I recall it was ~$350 for the barrel and ~$650 for the gunsmithing and Badger FTE muzzle brake. The action was from a .338 Win Mag that I had. I wasn't satisfied with the performance. It shot 1 MOA with hand loads but I wanted more muzzle velocity for long range. I know it's not much but that's what I've had luck with. I put it together as a grad student.
