i picked up two excellent condition nagant one im leaving the way it is and the other im going to add a stock and some kind of optics, so i would like to hear from the guys who have done different stuff to their nagants, what is the best mount option out there and where can i get a good looking stock for it

Re: nagant 91/30

I'm not a pureist, as I can't leave well enough alone, but I can tell you that I have not seen a MOSIN Nagant yet that looks any better than the stock configuration. Boyds makes a stock, and I believe there are Monty Carlo stocks out there for the MOSIN Nagant, but they just do not do the rifle justice.

Did you have a design in mind?

The Nagant is a pistol by the way.

Re: nagant 91/30

mosin nagant is a rifle i just put nagant to shorten it up and if i could post a pic i have of a 91/30 it sweet looking

Re: nagant 91/30

Well, i'm a mosinitis case, I have 2 91/30s, a Tula hex '34 as it is and a Izhvesk '39 round with an old Burris 4x pistol scope and a S&K scout mount... Both are good shooters, the Izhvesk a very good one, a very decent 220 yds. shooter. The only problem with the Mosins is You ( at least me ) never have enough of them...

1. The best mounting option is drill and tap mount, but not ATI mount and handle, which is POS.
2. Do not free float the barrel, unless you decide to shorten it to 20"-23". If keeping barrel length in original length, maintain pressure point somewhere between the muzzle and the middle of the barrel.
3. Modify the trigger to reduce trigger pull force, but do not use crazy methods like shimming, bending that flat spring, cutting the firing pin spring and other BS suggestions from primitive minds. You want good trigger - work with sear angles.
4. Any stock will work just fine, assuming that inletting matches receiver.
5. And do not use heavy ball machine gun ammo, like ammo with yellow/silver tip bullets.

Before you do anything, make sure that rifling is strong ( bore is not worn out), otherwise, you'll be wasting your time trying to make MN shoot better than it can.

Re: nagant 91/30

Dont buy anything ATI. It is all junk (scope base, bolt handle, stock etc)

Rock Solid Industries for the scope base and bolt handle.
Boyds makes a Mosin stock, MidwayUSA has them.
Timney Trigger with integral safety
Cut Barrel to 22" (works for me)

Re: nagant 91/30

Dave pretty much summed it up, although I do have an ATI on one of my rifles, I had to learn the hard way. Also have Bruce turn your bolt down for you http://www.maxshepherdboltproducts.com/

I was on a MN kick for a few years. They are fun to play with, just dont sink too much money into them.

I have about 8 or 9 of them, here are three that I sporterized
http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=3109361

The top one in the link is completely reversible, using a Jmeck scope mount.

Re: nagant 91/30

i like the scout look think ill keep the stock thats on it but i think i might clean it up so who makes a good scout mount and a good but not to xpensive scout scope

Re: nagant 91/30

I like the short barrel one what all do I need to cut mine down to 20 inches

Re: nagant 91/30

If you cut it down you will have to get another stock. One for the M44. The good thing is you can drop the 91/30 right in to the M44 stock and not have to change anything. Also with a scout setup you do not have to turn the bolt.

The best cut and crown is to have a smith do it. There are other options though. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b23lfzpZrJ4

This was you can cut it to 22" see how it shoots then down to 20" if you want.

Just remember that with a short barrel and factory or milsurp your MN will become a flamethrower. If you reload, you can realistically get your rifle to shoot 2 Moa or better.

For a MN you can remove the rear site and clamp on a Leapers 1 piece mount. They are designed for air guns, but do some reading and you will find many folks have used them with great success. Especially if you pin them

Here is what yours may look like with a M44 stock, Leapers and Cheapo NC Star pistol scope 20" bbl

If you dont mind a flimsy piece of crap, then yes.

Re: nagant 91/30

I was milling out AR15 risers and I found I needed height to get stiffness or the reticule would shake out of the scope.

Then I started TIG welding steel rings.

Then I did a combination of Aluminum and steel hogged out to Picatinny specs.

Finally, the ATI did it all, and was cheap.

Re: nagant 91/30

Buy a scope and mount from Accumounts and have someone mount it properly. I found two Mosins that shot well and scoped on with the PU and the other with a PE scope set up.

man those look great. I really like the leather covers on the lens, reminds me of my grandpas old zeiss monoculars.

Re: nagant 91/30

anyone use a pu scope on a mosin nagant how hard is it to install and use all the vids i seen looks like instead of a cheek weld its a chin weld

This one I put a Boyd's stock on and an ATI mount with a 3rd mounting hole

extrahole.jpg

This drawing shows where I put the 3rd hole in the ATI, because I pull the barrel to drill and tap.

I calculate female thread yield at 28 inch pounds, have verified that with similar soft steel 0.1" thick.

I recommend 20 inch pounds and shortened Unbrako Socket Head Cap Screws 10-32 x 5/8

Re: nagant 91/30

I also think the ATI scope mount is the only thing they make thats worth a flip and have used them on several rifles. However being a lazy person I dont find it necessarey to drill a 3rd hole in them. When I do one I change out the slotted screws for socket head so you can get some torque on them. I also bed the mount with epoxy (jb weld, loctite marine, etc.) then loctite the screws. Havent had one shoot loose yet. I can see where 3 screws would do the trick too if you're industrious lol.

Re: nagant 91/30

ric44, they hand out engineering degrees like toilet paper, but I am guessing you were born with mechanical reasoning.

No formal training (college ed) here just a want and willingness to learn and an inborn desire since youth to takes things apart just so I could put them back together lol. Good call Clark.

It really depends on the size and shape of your head, but it's not a traditional cheek weld like you would be used to on modern precision rifles, where you have the scope as close to the bore as possible. Personally, I don't think it's as bad as people make it sound, but that could be because I'm just used to shooting them. I do find that I get a more solid weld with my jaw opened slightly, so the top of the butt is about even with my top teeth. This forms a nice little pocket of sorts to nestle the butt into. That's just me, though. YMMV.

Re: nagant 91/30

Yeah its chin for me too but to be accurate with the rifle the hold has to be repeatable. The longer the shot the more important this is. Ive found as others have that as you look thru the PU scope there will be a ghost of an image toward the bottom of the field of view. This is the front sight post of the rifle. If you pay attention and split this image with the scope's vertical post then you have effectively put the scope and the rifle barrel on the same vertical plane and with a good chinweld you will be surprised what the old mosin snipers will do........and how FAR they will do it.
