So I was rezeroing my DTA the other day, and my first shot landed .9 high and .9 right. So I measured with the reticle of my 5-20 hd and adjusted down and left .9, my second and third shots landed about .3 low and left. I then readjusted it and she was zeroed, this is the first time it has happened and has seemed to work fine since, any ideas or suggestions?

I suppose make sure your scope is nice and level....make sure you were shooting with your crosshairs on the same plane both times.....try moving one direction at a time. Its always good to get ride off all variables. Was there possibly oil built up in the barrel for the first couple of shots?

    Re: SWFA SS problem

I had mine jumping around at the end of last year and I found a lose base...its a good idea to check.

    Re: SWFA SS problem

I would also check the base, and rings. Had this happen to me as well recently. It turned out the rail screw over the barrel tennon was sheared off...

    Re: SWFA SS problem

I had a leupold M8 acting up and rechecked eveything still would not hold zero. Sent it back to leupold the erector was sticky. They fixed it. Maybe yours is showing first signs of stickness?

    Re: SWFA SS problem

What would make it sticky, grease? Also, the temps have been alot warmer lately than when I first started using the scope, if it is lubricant wouldnt the warmer temps be better not worse?

    Re: SWFA SS problem

why are you blaming the scope? How do you know the first shot wasn't a flier due to a bad round or bad shooter or both?

lots of variables here....one shot does not a group make so it could have easily been something else and not the scope.

CB, I don't know what makes it go sticky inside. I just know mine got to where it was at a different zero everytime I took it out. Then an adjustment wouldn't take, then the next adjustment would be more than A+B. When took screwdriver handle and hit the erector, eveything moved, then adjustments made sense but I would have to rap scope to finalise adj. or it wouldn't stay. After this method my zero didn't change by magic in the safe. My problem may not apply to you.

    Re: SWFA SS problem

Ok, so today it happened again. Gun has been zeroed and shot several times since, I lined up the 7mmSaum on a 1250 yd steel. My BC said I would need 10.6mil, but it was off a bit (DA). I fired a couple shots both landing about 1.0 high, so I dialed 1.0 down, I fired a couple more shots both landing .5 low. I dialed .5 back up and elevation was perfect. After a couple windage corrections (2ish mph quarter value from 130*) I hit the target. I am not 100% sure the load is as accurate as Id like it to be, but it is plenty repeatable enough to see the differences in scope adjustments and actual change.

So, fast forward a half hour, I decided to switch barrels to .308. This is the same place and conditions I last shot 1250 with my covert .308. I dialed my come up and settled in for the first shot, which landed 5 mils right. Because I forgot to set my zero for the .308.(luckily the elevation is the same for both barrels, only the windage changes .9) so why was I so far right? (thats another question I supppose) Anyhow, I fired another shot, still right. I measured the distance to target,(around 4 mils) and adjusted acordingly, and again I was twice as far past the target as I had adjusted. It was like using a 2nd focal plane scope at half power, my corrections were double what I needed. So I came back halfway on my adjustment and made two consecutive hits.
So Im really wondering what the problem is, Im fully prepared to admit that its me. I just dont know what it could be. Any suggestions?

    Re: SWFA SS problem

I had problems with a 10x42 SS and SWFA ended up just sending me a new one, so shoot Pat at SWFA an email. They are pretty good about making things right with their products.

Thats a great idea LW, dont know why I didnt think of it . I could put another SS5-20 I have in a pepr, or I could borrow an NXS in a Sphur. But its been so sporatic Im afraid nothing would show. Id also like to have someone (with teaching experience) critique my technique.
