Have talked myself into adding a 260 Rem to the mix. The supply of off-the-shelf TAC style bolt guns seems to be a bit thin.

So it is Savage mdl 12 LRP with it's 26" barrel, have one of my 308 Rem 700s rebarreled, or a full-on custom as in Surgeon, Gradous, GAP, or one of the many others.

It would be great to hear from people shooting the Savage as to how well it works out for them.

Thanks,

Re: 260 Rem options

If you are looking into a full custom Surgeon you could also go with an Accuracy International AE Mk3 in 260 and save a little bit of money over the Surgeon. Also the AE's shoot amazing and for the price are probably the best deal in the high end market. Built like tanks to.

Re: 260 Rem options

I have Remington 700 SPS Sporter Hunter rifle that I rebarreled with a Shilen .260 Rmington 24" Barrel. It's by no means a "Custom" Rifle but for the money I spent including gunsmit it's by far the cheapest way to go. I it shoots .5 MOA or better on Average on most of the Range Trips!!! Can't ask for anything better than that!

Re: 260 Rem options

26" barrel works, but watch the twist. I've never gone slower than 8.5, this lets me shoot the heavy bullets like 140g-class.

Re: 260 Rem options

I second what hewlett says. I bought an AE in 308 and switched the barrel to 260 myself. Ordered my second barrel from Mile High a couple of weeks ago. I am shooting a 24" but ordered a 26". I went the semi-custom route first and got tired of shipping guns.

Re: 260 Rem options

If you like the setup of one of your 308s then have it rebarreled in 260. If you are not to keen on the setup go full custom. I dont think you can go wrong with a stiller action and any high end barrel mounted in the stock or chassis of your choice. I have 2 260s and love them both. One is a 19" and one is a 28" and both shoot under 1" groups @ 300yds. I have to say so far my favorate round. Fairly inexpensive to shoot, good barrel life and stupid accurate. My smith loves the 260 and talked me into it, never looked back after the first range trip stacked 4 shot on top of each other.

Re: 260 Rem options

If you had a 308 that you are willing to use as a donor. I would go that route. you can always go up from there. True the action add a custom barrel setup just how you want, and it will produce a great rifle. If you decide you want to go full custom, sell what you have and go for it.

Re: 260 Rem options

I have the LRP in .260 and so far it is a nice accurate affordable rifle. With handloads I am shooting sub 1/4in groups.

Re: 260 Rem options

That kind of capability is making the Savage LRP look better and better. Will have to go find one to check out in person.

Re: 260 Rem options

this has probably been covered, but why does Remington not produce any .260 rifles in anything other than a hunting configuration? Is it not the round they developed? I have been batting this same issue back and forth...my buddy shoots an LRP in 6.5CM, and the thing is a hammer (and a pig...heavy beast). Lastly, is Tikka an option in .260? I saw in their catalogue, a Varmint model in .260 but there are none for sale as far as I can tell. Any input there? Thanks, all.

Re: 260 Rem options

Rifle Shooter magazine did a write up on the M12 LRP in 6.5 creedmoor and they really liked it. With Hornady's match ammo it grouped half moa out to 800 yds. I think I'm going to buy that myself to play with over the summer.
