We just finished much of the live fire filming for season 2. We've got some really great high-speed shots that are going to look fantastic! Wait till you see an AK running at 8000 frames per second, pretty amazing stuff happening. That Phantom camera system is very intersting to work with, but the amount of light required is crazy. Four 4 foot mirror panels focusing the AZ sun on you gets pretty intense, I thought my collar had some smoke comming off it at one point.

Mr. Mantenga will be here next week to do some live fire segments of his own, then a few weeks of post-production and editing and it should be on your screens around July. Season 1 won several awards, this season will be even better! Look for it on the Outdoor Channel as "Midway USA's Gun Stories"

very cool ,the first season was first class, will be DVRing the next season for sure.
    thanx for the headsup.

Re: Gun Stories Season 2 - with Joe Mantenga

Looks like it airs this Wednesday, starting with the Model 29.

Re: Gun Stories Season 2 - with Joe Mantenga

The camera is really neat, more or less a computer with a lens. We can watch the playback instantly and set the frame rate to just about anything you like, though most of the shots only need 8k or so fps to get a real good look at what's going on. The intors on the Web were a last minute idea from Michael and Marshal, and this first one looks great.

There are some really great looking shots, plus Joe gets to shoot everything, which I think is fantastic. Already think about the gun list for next year. I think the Vickers needs some screen time...

Re: Gun Stories Season 2 - with Joe Mantenga

the first show this year was of my favorite revolver, it did look small in cory T's hands though and they didn't seem to shoot too many Elmer keith "magnums" but it was a very good show as usual.

Between time constraints (you can only capture a few seconds at 8300fps for example) and framesize on the closeups, we shot mostly .44 Specials. When they give you 2 seconds to fire 6 shots or a window of 8" to keep the gun in frame, I can't get there with the 240gr Buffalo Bore loads we had on hand.

You should have seen some of the stuff we had to do the the 1919 to get some of the shots. It's an interesting process making TV magic.

Saw it the other day! One of the few shows I watch all the way through.

having zero experience with TV show making and camera work, I really do appreciate the explanation and it makes perfect sense now why you used 44 special ammo for the "shot". i certainly do not want to come across as "nit picking" as I really enjoy the show.
    keep up the good work
    cheers.

Just watched the M1 Garand episode not sure whether it was season 1 or 2 but again it was great. Is there any way to see previous episodes? I'd like to watch the 1911 episode.

Same here, M1 episode was on during the 4th and I would love to see the 1911 episode.

I believe you can get the prior season on DVD from the Outdoor channel, I'll see if I can find out when Season 1 might rerun.

Re: Gun Stories Season 2 - with Joe Mantenga

compared to all the other gun TV shows like RJ, AG this one is actually the best of them all, not only for the historical accuracy but especially without the drama and BS.
I hope this show goes on for a long long time, so CoryT can wear off his gloves.

Re: Gun Stories Season 2 - with Joe Mantenga

Next week, the Thompson Submachine gun. Joe, being a good Chicago boy, really liked my 1928A1 with the drum. We shot that quite a bit after we wrapped. Glad you guys are enjoying the show, check out the pre-show clips on Downrange TV as well.

Season 3 is in the planning stages, anybody got any guns they really want to see? Broad interest and historical signifigance are important, so lets not try to get a Dardik or Webley-Fosbery on the list.

I'm thinking some British MG's, the Vickers Mk1 and BREN, Tim wants to get the M2HB fired up.

Re: Gun Stories Season 2 - with Joe Mantenga

I am thinking of a show on the 9mm subguns we don't see very often, like sten, karl gustaf, FMP, car 9, MP38 etc but no MP5 that one everybody knows also more on soviet weaponry like RPD, RPK and RPK 74, scorpion etc just to name a few.

Re: Gun Stories Season 2 - with Joe Mantenga

The AK will be on this season. The STEn and Sterling would be good. RPD and PKM are also good items, I'm sure we'll get to them as well. The DShK would be cool, but ammo is insane to get in the US and the .50 BMG conversions are not all that reliable.

Uzi? pretty inventive in it's time. Semi auto shotgun like the A5.

Re: Gun Stories Season 2 - with Joe Mantenga

I really like that show. One of those shows that I have set to record on the DVR. Also, my 3yr old loves the music in the opening and ending credits. He will actually sit and watch it with me, just for that.

Re: Gun Stories Season 2 - with Joe Mantenga

The grin on Joe Mantenga's face after shooting the Thompson is priceless.

Re: Gun Stories Season 2 - with Joe Mantenga

I really like that show. Very informative and have some great visuals!

Re: Gun Stories Season 2 - with Joe Mantenga

I think a show on the Bren would be great to see!
Tell me if im wrong CORY T but the COL. was involved in that.

Re: Gun Stories Season 2 - with Joe Mantenga

If you are talking about the Bren 10, as opposed to the Bren LMG, then yes, Col. Cooper was the primary influence in it's development. As it never really got out of the starting blocks, I doubt there will be an episode on it. There are just too few of them to be meaningful to most people. Kind of like the Dardik, Gyrojet or Webley-Fosberry automatic revolver. All interesting, but not major milestones to where we are today.

Then, why not making a show on those rare birds??

Re: Gun Stories Season 2 - with Joe Mantenga

Did you do the "Grease Gun" smg? High speed movies of 45 cal tracers would be cool, too. Wait for after a rainy day for that, or Smoky the Bear will be pissed.

Re: Gun Stories Season 2 - with Joe Mantenga

I agree on the Bren - 10 .I Would kill to see a documentary on the Col . I think he has influenced quite afew people maybe not as many as stoner but he definately had an impact.
