After class with 700P LTR, need upgrade opinions

Hi,

Just finished an intro precision rifle class with my stock 700P LTR. The only mod I made prior to the class was having the barrel threaded and installing a Smith Enterprise USCG muzzle brake.

I was pleased with the rifle for the most part, shooting slightly less than an inch at 100 yards, getting 100% hits out to 600 and getting about 30% hits at 1000 yards on a 2 MOA target on my first attempt at that distance.

The main problem I was having is that the internal magazine was not feeding reliably and I had about a dozen instances where the next round did not chamber out of about 360 rounds fired over the weekend. While not a huge deal it is a little annoying, plus the internal magazine is somewhat awkward to load.

Anyhow, I'd like to fix this by going to Badger Ordnance M5 bottom metal and improving the bolt handle with this kinetic research model to make sure I'm not short stroking at all due to the small handle that comes on the factory bolt.

My main question: I have seen a few reports that say the HS precision stock and it's bedding block on the 700P require inletting to fit badger M5 bottom metal. Can anyone tell me if it will require inletting or not and also give an opinon on the Kinetic screw on bolt lift as opposed to getting the bolt machined to accept a badger bolt handle.

Thanks in advance!

Yes it'll definitely need inletting.

hdbiker is right... there rarely a drop in fit.

There are SEVERAL guys on here though that can easily do the inletting and most likely have the bottom metal instock as well.

I have had a few done by sponsor/members on here and turn around was EXTREMELY fast.

* Good shooting though.. Now the addiction really starts

I think that there other options that might work better than a badger DBM. Like the Surgeon. Most will have to be in-letted. I think that there is one that only needs a tad bit of in letting.

At the cost of a DBM you might want to think about selling the stock and using that money to buy a AICS 1.5. $185 for the stock and $355 for the badger $35 for a good stock pack = about $200 shy of a AICS 1.5 which will correct all of problems that the LTR stocks have.

This is just my opinion YMMV. I went the long way from a LTR then DBM then only to decide to get a AICS, cause it solved the problems I was trying to fix and was rock solid.

I have an AICS and love it, as Im sure everyone will/does say. I went with viperskins though.

Re: After class with 700P LTR, need upgrade opinions

Or get the HS Precision detachable magazine assembly and magazines.

Re: After class with 700P LTR, need upgrade opinions

There are a lot of things that do not justify through performance the difference in price compared to the next cheaper alternative

However, the differrence between the hs dbm and the badger/seekins pe bottom metals is huge IMHO and well worth the price difference

Here's a vote for CDI Precision DBM. I have one in my LTR and it is very slick. Not a big fan of the super-long magazine release on the Badger.

I'm a bit confused. Was the feeding problem a mechanical failure resulting from some defect in the factory magazine; or, was it a result of operator error (i. e. short-stroking the bolt)? If it's the former, I'd return it to Remington for warranty service and see if that cures the problem. The latter is a training issue that should be addressed prior to sinking additional funds into components only to discover the issue still exists.

A DBM isn't going to fix that.

Thanks for the input so far.

The possibility of short stroking is why I'm looking at a bolt lift too. The instructor watching me during one of the malfunctions said he didn't think I was short stroking but I guess it can be hard to diagnose. It wasn't happening a ton, like I said once every 30-40 rounds or so I'd work the bolt then get a "click". I've also read that the HS precision feed method can cause problems due to off-center feeding and felt maybe that was contributing.

The other magazine related problem I was having was sometimes only being able to load two rounds into the magazine and not being able to put anymore in unless I emptied the gun and started over, even as I was making sure to push the rounds to the rear of the magazine as I loaded it. This only happened twice during the 3 day course though.

Check the internal mag box and make sure it is seated against the bottom of the receiver. It is has slipped down, you're going to see the symptoms you mentioned.
