Tomahawks!! but useful ones....

So, I love tomahawks, but I am too pragmatic...or just a stick in the mud. I have to be able to use them, so the Tacticool ones don't appeal too much, the spike end... what honestly would I use that for as I am not deployed.

Found this one
The Loggerhead

It has the lighter head and hammer pol. Slightly longer and thinner handle like a tomahawk but a more axe like blade.

Anyone know of similar ones? looking or ideas!!

Re: Tomahawks!! but useful ones....

If you want to go more traditional looking then the Cold Steel Trail hawk or the Pipe Hawk (pipe is solid and usable as a hammer poll) are quite nice and usable. Plus if you break the handle in the field, you can fashion a new one.

Re: Tomahawks!! but useful ones....

Got a SOG for about 40 bucks. It works well on game and timber.

Re: Tomahawks!! but useful ones....

Here is my take, I am pushing 40 right now and I am at the point in my life where I no longer care what others think, if something has been eating away at me and I have the means I get it. I deserve my toys damnit. I own a vault full of guns that were specifically designed for combat yet my combat days are hell and gone. I carry a 400.00 switchblade cause I can (probably from watching too many movies), hell I drive a gas guzzler hemi with a Nitrous bottle in the trunk just cause I always wanted "cool" car even though the cool cars now are retarded, its cool to me. Get your tomahawk, man and be proud that you own a 425.00 hatchet that you will cherish too much to chop anything with, what does it do? It brings you happiness. Thats what it does.
Some people call this a mid life crisis... Nope it's a reckoning. A mid life crisis is just that a crisis, I had one of those too and that sucks this is much better.
Rant off

A really expensive beer because if you're going to drink your money you may as well taste it.

Buy that man a beer!

I like my stuff to be useful, but sometimes I want something just because. Since I am not on welfare and my family is taken care of, there isn't any reason I shouldn't be able to purchase something that will give me some pleasure. If others think it's cool, then great. If they don't...TFB.

Re: Tomahawks!! but useful ones....

Go for it. RMJ makes nice stuff.

I agree, not super practical but having one does make watching the Last of the Mohicans more enjoyable.

I used to have several RMJ hawks but have cut the collection back to one... a shrike. May have to order a hammerhead now.

The good news is that they are fairly easy to move if you decide it is not for you.

I'm 55 and agree with this 100%. I have paid my dues. The family is well taken care of and will continue to be if I'm dead and gone this time tomorrow.

My motto for the last 5 years or so has become this: If it is for me PRICE is no object!

Very nice. Now I really want one of their "Camp Tomahawks" for camp chores. The fact that they are hand forged and traditional design is a definite plus. I like tools that I can proudly pass on to my kids when I am too old to use them anymore.

Re: Tomahawks!! but useful ones....

I have one from these guys:

McGowan

Bar none, this thing has had the piss worked out of it. Makes short work of butchering a deer, and can be fun to have around the campsite as well...

Re: Tomahawks!! but useful ones....

I have no idea why hawks take such a beating on the threads. Up here in heavy woods a good side slap of a spike head into the closest tree makes for one hell of a stable rest. For joints and the rest, little can get it done like a hawk. RMJ is a great product and Ryan is a great guy.

You can go pretty small with these as long as they are thick.

You throw these much? Looks like it was designed to be thrown.

Re: Tomahawks!! but useful ones....

I bought 4 of the SOG tomahawks to give as X-mas presents for my brothers. Midway had or might still have them on sale for $28.99. Decent edge for chopping, surprisingly sharp, the point end could use more time on the grinding stone. Handles are out of nylon held by two screws. If you throw them which some do even though it is not recommended the handles are replaceable should they break. I've alway felt more comfortable with a tomahawk than a fixed blade for close encounters of the unwanted kind, either 4 legged creatures or the more dangerous coniving 2 legged ones.

Re: Tomahawks!! but useful ones....

Another plus for SOG..
Got one as a gift used to throw primitive when I was a kid....

The SOG has since been to the field......

It is handy for clearing weeds for a camp spot, chopping limbs out of the river ( after fish has took your setline around it too far down to reach)nice for puting in the canoe or on the pack...

oh yeah that useless blut spike is mighty handy for lifting dutch
oven or coffee pot out of the fire......

Good luck

Charles

No, I don't throw mine (though my buddies have thrown theirs). I just can't get around taking a fine tool...and throwing it a tree.

Makes me cringe, like taking your favorite rifle and beating it against a tree.

Re: Tomahawks!! but useful ones....

I have a SOG, I like it, its nice and light, came with a good edge and has held up to hard use real good so far. Back in Nov./Dec. we experienced a pretty rough windstorm here in the San Gabriel Valley, my landlord had a friend who lost a lambo to a downed tree.

Thankfully, my house didn't experience any damage but there were a good number of trees and limbs down around the block. My college classes were cancelled and I had no power so I figured I'd help out by clearing debris. I spent the morning and early afternoon with the Hatchet chopping up down limbs into manageable sizes and moved them off the streets and sidewalks. Stopped once I started developing a blister on my palm, but I did a lot of work at that point, the blade is still sharp but could definitely use a touch up as it has dulled a bit, but is still workable.

Re: Tomahawks!! but useful ones....

I found Two Hawks when I saw that Dave Canterburys Pathfinder school sells one. I believe the Pathfinder model is the Two Hawks Longhunter, it looks sturdy and well built, more like a proper tool than something to play with and throw around (though it looks to be a good thrower as well).

Re: Tomahawks!! but useful ones....

+1 on the RMJ Tomahawks they are solid.
