looking to build a .300 WM out of a 5R rem. or rem police rifle
using an AICS fixed stock. Please advise what break you are using for best recoil reduction. I have a holland on my .338LM
it works great. Thanks for any help

Re: Muzzel Break for .300 WM ideas 4 least recoil

Apa fatbastard or centershot four port muscle

Re: Muzzel Break for .300 WM ideas 4 least recoil

just put the apa fat bastard on my sendero. Gonna try and shoot it tomorrow if time will permit, will post back when I do. I can tell you one thing, it sure does look mean.

Re: Muzzel Break for .300 WM ideas 4 least recoil

I put the APA Little Bastard on my 300 WM Sendero and it really works great. Loud ... but really cuts down on recoil. My rifle is fairly heavy though ... that helps as well.

I have the APA LB on a Rem 700 5r .300wm. It is a pleasure to shoot. Ear plugs are 100% necessary though.

Re: Muzzel Break for .300 WM ideas 4 least recoil

I have to throw my support of the "Little Bastard" in with the others. It makes my 7mmRemMag feel like a .243.

People on either side of me on the line HATE it though

My Badger FTE works great on my 300wm, hardley any recoil at all

Re: Muzzel Break for .300 WM ideas 4 least recoil

+1 for the Lil'Bastard - I had an APA rifle with one and it kicked less than my 308's. It is a very effective brake.

Re: Muzzel Break for .300 WM ideas 4 least recoil

I have a good friend running an RD precision brake on a 5R .300 win mag and I have shot it quite a bit, the brake does a really nice job taming recoil. On top of that it really doesn't make the gun any more loud which was nice to find out.

Re: Muzzel Break for .300 WM ideas 4 least recoil

I really like the Little Bastard...thinking that is what i am going to go with over the FSC30/PRC. Does it come a straight 1" piece and then it has to be turned down to match the barrel?

Re: Muzzel Break for .300 WM ideas 4 least recoil

For the most recoil reduction either the APA LB or the APA LJ. I don't think they look bad with a rear chamfer and this retains the most surface area in the ports. But not everyone will share the opinion. No right or wrong. ;-)

The LJ is a six-port design like the LB but the ports are a little larger and has the cone nose similar to the FB; sort of a "love child" between the LB and FB.

Sorry to hijack. How would one go about installing on a rifle that's already set up? I assume the smith needs to remove the barrel to properly thread it, correct?

Thanks!

To do it the best way possible, yes the 'smith would remove the barrel from the action and dial it up in the lathe. If the barrel is already threaded, it may still be possible to use the existing threads but cut a little to time the brake. These brakes also need to have the bore opened up to proper size for the caliber to be used. Then if you want the rear contoured, it is done at this time as well.

Re: Muzzel Break for .300 WM ideas 4 least recoil

I would use the Muscle Brake fro centershot rifles in WI, Jim See makes a very good brake. His 4 port Muscle brake tamed the recoil on a 338 LM I built for a customer so I could easily shoot it, I have had three complete shoulder rebuilds on my shooting side so I am a little careful when it comes to recoil.

Take a look at the Harrell's precision brakes. They only cost $30 and they look decent.

Re: Muzzel Break for .300 WM ideas 4 least recoil

Ok so I shot my 300 with my new apa fat bastard break, first muzzle break i have ever purchased or shot for that matter, and I have to say two things. 1. this break is freakin bad ass literally I took my 223 along also and I think it kicked the same or less. 2. the damn gun smith i assume didnt order the correct diameter for the caliber and the damn bullet was hitting the edge of the break, but i took it back and he bored it out and it shoots fine so maybe i will get it sighted in next time i go.

Re: Muzzel Break for .300 WM ideas 4 least recoil

I had a Badger FTE put on my .300 wsm. My 14 year old shoots the rifle with no recoil issues.

Re: Muzzel Break for .300 WM ideas 4 least recoil

+1 for the APA Fat Bastard. I have one on my 300WM and it definitely has less recoil than a 308. As far as the noise, I wear only foam earplugs and it doesn't bother me any.

Re: Muzzel Break for .300 WM ideas 4 least recoil

I had a brake made for my 300. It is similar to the ones pictured above, except that rather than round, I had mine made with wider "wings" to catch and divert more of the gasses. It works great, and reduces recoil to about the level of my TRG22.

Re: Muzzel Break for .300 WM ideas 4 least recoil

Bookhound, Thanks for the info!

87Dixieboy, I would have been Super Pissed w/ that 'smith' (parts changer)!!!

Re: Muzzel Break for .300 WM ideas 4 least recoil

I like the RAD brake because it is lower profile and can follow the barrel contour.

Re: Muzzel Break for .300 WM ideas 4 least recoil

Pretty much but this guy is the only one around that I know of. He does great work as he does the plating work for colt and a few other companies must have just been a fluke I dunno
