Gunsmithing RUST

Hey All,

so i have some of my longguns on a work table in a bedroom with a bandana/cloth cover laid over them to prevent dust or lint from getting on them but when i remove the cover i am noticing some rust on some of the parts. not all of the metal but some certain places. I dont think the room is too humid...not sure what is going on.

any thoughts or advise?

Could be from the oils and salts that come off of your hands when handling the guns. Just a thought.

Some people have poison hands that make stuff rust bad. I'm one of them. To the point I mention it to folks when I handle their guns.

My solution is to melonite every piece of steel I own - and to not have collectors items. I literally sold a BEAUTIFUL Smith & Wesson model 41 because if this.

Have you metered the humidity in your room? Might be higher than you think. Here in Az I don't have problem.

#0000 steel wool and some light oil will take it off with out hurting the finish.

RemOil works great. A light coat will prevent it from happening again.
