Sidearms & Scatterguns What generation is my Glock

How do I tell the difference between the different generations? I picked a g30 up in a trade and am looking to trade it toward another rifle. The individual would like to know what generation it is. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: What generation is my Glock

email is fine

Some additional info from GlockTalk

- 1st Generation has the smooth, rounded “pebble-grip”.
- 2nd Generation has the “Grenade-style” checkering with NO fingergrooves (see picture).
- 3rd Generation has BOTH fingergrooves AND accessory rail on the front dustcover.
- If you have a subcompact (G-26, -27, -28, -29, -30, -33, -36) OR a “transition model” when Glock was putting fingergrooves but no accessory rail, then you have a 2.5 Generation. There is even a slight variation here, as some of the earliest G-26 & G-27s had smooth fingergrooves, without checkering in-between the grooves. Some people do not count the sub-compacts as 2.5 Gen since they came out after the 3rd Gen frames were already being made. Note: newer -29, -30 are now coming with rails.

Re: What generation is my Glock

Thanks for the link. This glock does have finger grooves and an accessory rail on the front. I also found some additional pics. It's definitely a 3rd generation. Thanks for the help and getting me headed in the right direction.

Re: What generation is my Glock

Now for a little more confusion. I have a Glock 23 RTF. It's basically a Gen 3.5. It has the grip texture of the new Gen4s but is still considered a Gen 3 with a "raised, textured finish". I didn't know what I had until I got a straight answer from a Glock rep.

Actually, the gen3 RTF is "rough textured finish", and is different than the gen4. They look similar, and are, but the gen4s are more dull. If you look at the texture of the RTF under a high power magnifying glass, the bumps are actually tiny "cuboids" - they look like pyramids. The gen4s are little pyramids with the tops chopped off.

I love the RTF, and wish they hadn't shit-canned it. Apparently, CCW/CPL users carrying IWB bitched about their love-handles getting scratched up.

Re: What generation is my Glock

^^^^^^^^ +1 The RTF2 is an awesome grip! Nothing else feels quite right! Solution for a rough grip rubbing.....wear a friggin' undershirt! I have gen 3, gen 3 rtf2 w/ gills and gen 4 and my rtf2 is def my favorite.
