5r milspec

Re: 5r milspec

Great shooters. I started out with one and got a lot of trigger time. If it was going to be a starter gun for you I would probably suggest looking at another remington that was a little cheaper to get trigger time on and quite possibly shoot as well. There are other options out there like the Savage but I dont know that much about them since I shoot Remington style actions.

Re: 5r milspec

I think the 5Rs are great shooters that will get you in the game and let you see what works and does not work for you without spending a ton of money on a custom, only to find your preferences change with experience.

Mine is still all-factory except the trigger. It won't hang with my Kriegered Surgeon, but it still gets shot a lot and is definitely minute-of-steel-plate.

I don't see myself ever getting rid of mine.

Re: 5r milspec

I bought one in .308 for my first LR rifle. While I don't have anything to compare it to, it shoots better than I do and has been great so far. I put a fixed 10x Super Sniper HD scope on it and my longest shot to date is 802 yards.

I should also mention that after searching and reading and researching it was the advice I got from this forum that helped formulate my decision....

Re: 5r milspec

Great guns to get started with. They are extremely accurate, and they hold their value.

I had one for a while, but due to my obsession of tinkering with guns, I quickly went to savages so I can rebarrel easily at home.

Re: 5r milspec

Great rifle for a starter in long range shooting. Actually just got home from shooting mine at 600 yards and playing around at 300 with a metal plate. You won't be disappointed if you decide to get one.

Re: 5r milspec

It's amazing that Remington can still turn out a rifle so well received on this forum. I wonder if there is hope for them yet as a company.

Re: 5r milspec

They are an overpriced marketing ploy. For the same money mabye a little less I'd go with a Savage 10 FCP-SR, more rifle for the money in my opinion. I own both rifles and I would take the savage over the Remington it has better more consistant build quality also I get better accuracy out of the Savage the only thing the Remington has over the Savage is a smoother bolt.

Re: 5r milspec

I would say for a rifle of that price it should come with a trigger that is suitable for the purpose of the rifle, if they still make the 40X trigger it should come with that

otherwise, once the trigger is changed the performance/features to price ratio is damn good

Re: 5r milspec

if you're going to keep the barreled action as is for a good while, I'd say it's a great choice. If you're going to rip it apart in a year and have a full build performed on that action, I'd say get a cheaper model and shoot it until you rebuild it.

Re: 5r milspec

Thanks for the replys guys, once it turns up i will post the results. It will be interesting to see how it compares to my 700 police.

Re: 5r milspec

I feel the milspec is a decent buy. After getting a couple hundred rounds through mine, I decided to upgrade to a chassis. I sold the stock and bottom metal for $300 and it helped pay for the chassis system. After a couple more hundred rounds, and knowing what I like and don't like, I decided to send the action to get trued and a new barrel put in. Before I sent the rifle to get trued, I was getting .6-.7 moa consistant groups. Sure one could say an SPS tactical could achieve the same results for half the price, but one of the number one upgrades SPS tactical owners do is upgrade their stock to an HS Precision, one that the milspec already has.

What I mean by all this, any Remington 700 rifle in my opinion is a great. There are so many aftermarket parts and a network of users, gunsmiths that could help dress up your rifle. You are paying a premium for the 11 twist and stainless action/barrel/trigger, but you could make most of your money back selling the stuff you change out.

Re: 5r milspec

I love mine! As others have mentioned, if you plan to keep (at least) the action and barrel for a while, it's a great platform. If you are looking to shoot something right out of the box and not mess with it (yeah right) then it's even better. As others have mentioned, you can build on to it over time as you progress. First thing i would suggest is the trigger.

Re: 5r milspec

I like mine a lot too. For how much money I plan on putting into it I wish I would have started with a custom rifle. And the end of it I'll probably replace every part in it.

I'd order a timney trigger right off the bat though, that's the best upgrade you can do for it.

I felt the same way and eventually got customs builds.

Re: 5r milspec

I just went and put a deposit on a 5R .223. It was a pretty easy choice for me - whatever I bought was going to be housed in the spare AICS I have sitting here, so for the little bit extra (not that much extra once I sell the HS stock), I got the SS barrelled action and 5R rifling.. seems like a good deal to me.

Re: 5r milspec

I did the timney trigger right up front as well. I feel it was the most worth while thing to do to the rifle. I may try bedding it but that is about it. To date my best group has been .310 at 100 yards with 175 grain GMM on a perfect morning.

I think it is a great rifle but I don't have much of a point of reference since it is my first precision rifle buy if it even qualifies as a precision rifle but I like it. As far as it being a marketing ploy, that's just ridiculous. I've never seen this gun advertised and Remington doesn't even list it on their website or catalog so it can't really qualify as a marketing ploy or even hype when so many people have gotten good results with one.

Re: 5r milspec

I like my 5R as well. It wasn't my first choice but happened to be at a local shop and I couldn't pass it up. The trigger is consistantl but mine is around 2.5 lbs. it really shoots well with the 175SMK bullets. Last year I took second only to a GAP. If my action screws didn't loosen it would have been mine. Live and learn. For the money it's a great deal.
