I bought the S&W 1911TA E-Series about a month ago. I'm loving it so far. This is my first 1911 so I can't really comment too much on comparing it to others, but I'm happy with my purchase. I've shot other 1911's before but not enough to give a detailed description on what is different. The one thing I can comment on is that it came with a really nice, light, crisp trigger. I also really dig the night sights. No problems so far and I'm at about 300 rounds.

I like to stay as traditional as possible on 1911's. Smith makes good external extractors , it's just not my cup of tea. They work fine for smith though.

Have the e-series 1911 scandium frame SS slide. It's my daily ccw. I've put 750+ rounds through it so far without any problems. I've loaded mags of 230gr ball, 200gr +P HP, 117gr aluminum fragmented, empty cases and it eats them all up like candy. The trigger is crisp. I like the night sights. Good balance between size and weight with the scandium frame. Shoots better than I can. And she is pretty to boot.

Didn't John Browning's later models have the external extractor on them?

I like the "E" series guns quite a bit actually. S&W is making some damned fine 1911's now.
Mountain View Sports over on Old Seward HWY had a pretty good selection last time I was in there. And they'll match most any price you find in town. Good people.

My E Series 1911SC has just at 1000 rounds thru it and has yet to malf.
Everyone who has shot it smiles because it is a very accurate piece. The external extractor has never been an issue for me. Any trouble I ever had with more traditional 1911s was with the old style extractor.

I have one and absolutely love it. It is a lot of gun for the price. It has been more reliable than my kimbers, and nearly as accurate as my Wilsons.

Good friend of mine has a S&W 1911. Link came apart from barrel while shooting. Locked the gun up. S&W paid for shipping fixed it and had it back in a week. Pretty good service but we will see how the gun holds up.

No.
That review looks excellent. It's too bad this gun has an external extractor, because the remainder of the features look great.
I would personally probably replace all of the internals and the sights anyway, so it's just a shame that the slide would have to be replaced to get rid of the external extractor (which removes any hope of it being a cost effective gun for me).

I have found nothing wrong with the external extractor. S&W and Sig are two that come to mind that produce 1911s with them and both have good reps.

It does not follow that all new technology is good, or beneficial, or doesn't create more problems than it solves.
The 1911 is designed to be a controlled round feed action. An external extractor design inevitably must interfere with that. If S&W and Sig have created reliable external extractor 1911s, more power to them.
I shoot quite a bit and my internal extractors seem to be working just fine for me. I'm aware that many manufacturers screw up the installation of the internal extractor and too many end users mess with theirs and introduce problems. The external extractor is designed to be the solution, because it's consistent and can rely on springs that are more easily replaced. It also removes a hand-fit part from the assembly, potentially improving the profit on the gun. It does NOT follow that a properly fit and installed internal extractor is not just as reliable as an external extractor.
And for the record, I'm not a huge fan of adjustable sights either. I do have guns with adjustable sights, but I personally would much rather have a gun that is sighted with the load that I use and have the sights fixed right there. Some of my competition guns do have adjustable sights and I'm okay with that because they are range guns only. Anything you ever see me carrying on the street has fixed sights, though, and that's not an accident.

Any 1911 mag fits it.
I use mostly CMC power mags in all my 1911s.

had 1 FTF on the first factory mag on the last round.
