Nice Rifle, but any reason why the Rings are so High? Looks like you could go at least 1 size lower. Any how, Good Looking Build!

Re: just building a remington 700 sps

Ya i have no idea why they were so high. I needed a set so i picked these up... Ill prob get a new set as soon as i get my new optics

Re: just building a remington 700 sps

Looks good. Save those rings for any future AR builds

Was this a factory .338L?

Re: just building a remington 700 sps

I would get an oversized bolt knob, easier to manipulate, faster to cycle, the factory 700 knob stinks. Also, if you like the high rings, keep'em. I personally like the higher rings because I like to keep my head more upright, it's more comfortable to me. The more comfortable you are, the better you'll shoot. If you need more elevation adjustment on the scope, then go lower. Other than that, maybe a paint job, good looking rifle though.

Re: just building a remington 700 sps

As of right now im prob going to keep the taller rings till i get my new optics... Any idea what kind of knob i should get

Re: just building a remington 700 sps

Karl Kampfeld at Kampfeld Customs will do a good job for your knob.

I found that a 50mm objective on a SPS in an AICS worked perfect (for me) with Seekins low rings (granted that was a 35mm scope tube).

I miss my days in Summerlin; there is no place like it. I bought/sold/lived in 5 different Summerlin houses before I had to head east.

Re: just building a remington 700 sps

There's too many good ones to list, there's really not much difference between them, it's just your personal taste. If you want to add weight to your rig, go with a steel knob. If you don't care, there's probably more to choose from in aluminum. Also, make sure your smith knows how to properly install so you get the added length you'll need, it's secure, and it looks good. Also, a lot of smiths will turn their own bolt knobs to your specs and the good ones will make sure to finish them to match the rest of your bolt/rig (paint/parkerize/blue/etc).

Re: just building a remington 700 sps

honestly the only thing I see that that gun needs is more range time. Bolt knobs and such are nice but not needed.

Re: just building a remington 700 sps

What fun is that? Hell, I don't need a custom .358 Norma to hunt whitetail at 50yds, but I do. You're missing the whole point brother, it aint about need, it's about fun, toys, the build, the stories...dang, you're supposed to enjoy this stuff, come on...

Re: just building a remington 700 sps

That's a great looking setup. How do you like the AICS stock? Did it require any fitting?

Re: just building a remington 700 sps

your accuracy will improve when you lower your scope. By having the scope so high you increase the error with the slightest tilt of the rifle. And nobody is perfect so the rifle will be tilted to some degree or another with every shot. By lowering the scope, you lower the margin of error. My advice is to drop 2 heights in rings. Your groups, especially at long range, will shrink dramatically.
