I am looking into either getting a protech or microtech auto knife. But I thought you had to be either mil or leo to carry one is this true in Texas and if so what kind of trouble can you get in, in Texas. No reason to have a nice knife if you can't carry it. This will be an everyday carry knife and be used a lot. I really like the microtech out the front knives but If I can't use it I don't want to drop that kind of coin.

Thanks
Walter

Re: automatic knives

I don't know about Texas, but in Indiana you have to be either a cop, firefighter, or EMT to be able to fill out the paperwork to get approved. I have a friend who is on the fire department around here, and he can only use it while on the job. Stupid I think.

In Indiana, throwing stars are also illegal.

What does that mean? I'm just curious.

I do like auto knives, and they are legal in the state I hang out in most of the year, however, with the BS laws everywhere else, they're not worth messing with for me.

If you can't open your knife with one hand, get one designed so that you can. A Janich-inspired Spyderco, like the Yojimbo, comes instantly to mind.

Re: automatic knives

Consult your Concealed carry law for the state, some states will allow you to carry an auto knife if you have a concealed weapons permit.

I will agree that an auto knife is no faster then an assisted open knife. I've compared a Benchmade auto with several other assisted knives and it's a horse a piece.

Re: automatic knives

oh and i've never had a problem with my benchmade opening by itself in my pocket. It's an excellent design.
I never use the blade lock.

Re: automatic knives

I had several auto knives and sold them off. The only one handed knife I still own is my Balisong with Tanto blade. I usually do not carry it either and my daily knife is a Cold stee folder with thumb tab.

In Ohio (unless its changed) all "one handed knives" fall into the switchblade category. Switchblades, gravity knives, butterfly knives will all get you in trouble unless your LE, military, or have a Dr. written waiver (so I am told).

Great for collecting but will land you in trouble with the cops. The last time I carried my Balisong I popped it out and spun it around at Home Depot to cut some tie down rope. Man, did I get some weird looks.

Re: automatic knives

The real question is why the government feels the need to ban an auto knife. Are people afraid of being attacked by some greaser from a 50's movie?

The lock is for pocket pool players.

Re: automatic knives

I like my waved Emerson and Spydercos. If you want a fast manual knife, I'd look into one of those.

Re: automatic knives

Auto Knife laws are a perfect example of frivolous legislation.
You have to love a law where being an amputee makes you exempt though…

Blam...
Just like that you get "Class Three" knives.
People can immediately demand black market prices that are in excess of 200% MSRP.
The argument is a very good reason to move to Oregon though...

.Mil & LEO folks get a pass at least.
(Only as long as you are using one in the course of your duties and keep it stored while off duty though.)

If you look up stupid ineffective law in the dictionary, this should be the example.
Reversal of this and the "Full Auto" amendment of the 1986 Firearms Owner's Protection Act are two things that I have deemed lost causes.

Hit the nail on the head. I arrested a guy for this and other charges just the other night.

Yip. I would love to see the Full Auto amendment repealed, but as long as the average citizen sees no use for full autos, he will have no reason to protest an unconstitutional law. The "use it or lose it" principle applies very well to constitutional rights. That is why it is critical that everyone here takes someone inexperienced with guns to a range. And everyone here has a responsibility to, at the least, teach their kids how to use a gun.

Re: automatic knives

I much rather have my SOG flash II over any "automatic" knife. Plus its legal to carry.

Please clarify? You arrested him for carrying an auto knife? When I lived in Texas you could own them but not carry them. You could buy them all over the state. I do not think the law has changed.

Re: automatic knives

CCW permit is required in GA to carry. my spyderco native is easy to open with one hand, no need for an auto.
