is anyone here getting decent results using a 243 out past 600 yards?
i ask because i have one with a 1-12 or 1-14 twist that i am looking to rebarrel if enough people say go for it.

Re: 243 to 1000????

A 243 is one of the best non magnum short actions at 1000 yards, using heavy bullets (which require a faster twist somewhere in the 7.5-7.7 range.) I have taken mine to and past 1000, and it totally smokes a 308.

Go for it. 243 is one of the best calibers out there. Use the search function, there is plenty of info out there on this. I always use google search, and for instance just typed "snipershide 243 1000" as I have looked myself a lot lately. Here is just a couple.

I am running a factory Remington 700, 9 twist barrel. When I rebarrel in the future it will either be to 7.5tw or 8tw. If you are looking to shoot 105, 107 grain bullets I would go with 8 twist. 7.5tw is more reserved for the Dtacs.

Re: 243 to 1000????

115dtacs work really good out to at least 1200 yds. I am shooting a gap with a 1:7.5 twist I think and the dtacs are great. It totally outdoes my 308. It shoots less than 1/2moa out to 800 yds for me, after that I think I am the let down but I am still shooting 1moa out to 1200yds

Re: 243 to 1000????

I've been competing with mine for about the last 4 years. I run 115gr BN coated DTACS (they come pointed and I think the B.C. is around .590) in a 26", 7.5 twist Krieger and they are fantastic. I don't push them too hard but with 42 grains of H4350 I get them to about 2,950. I know a lot of guys push them harder but that's where I've had my best consistency. I shoot 1K matches at Sacramento all the time and it's fantastic. I've taken it as far as 1,350 and kept them on an IPSC sized plate. Minimal recoil, fantastic performance, 10 rounds in a magazine, short action, all kinds of goodness there.

Re: 243 to 1000????

sounds like its time to order a new barrel!
I really didnt think it would "smoke" my 308 but I guess only time will tell

Time has already told for more than a few years now.

Re: 243 to 1000????

LOL at Rob01, yes it will smoke the 308 for sure, just look at match scores and what the winners are using (hint, it's not a 308).

Shot my 243 to 1715 yards a couple weekends ago, tons of fun.

Re: 243 to 1000????

a straight 243 will kick a 308's ass any day of the week. The bullet bc's are higher and velocities are much higher. I'm not shooting the 243, but a 6mm SLR with a 105 berger hunting vld at 3150fps, out of a 24" barrel and it'll walk all over a 308. 1/8" twist for the 105's. I'm at 23.5moa at 1K.

The 243 is a great little round.

Re: 243 to 1000????

is it enough, absolutely, you'll need at minimum a 1-8 but preferably 1-7.5 or 1-7.7 to shoot the 105-115 gr. the heavy 243 make hits at 1000 easy.

Re: 243 to 1000????

In the google search bar enter;

site:snipershide.com (search keywords)

And voila you have google powered snipershide search engine.... explore and learn.

Re: 243 to 1000????

I would rebarrel for 243 again. I am running a 7.7 twist Bartlein, shooting the dtacs. By far the best shooting combo i have found. The hornady 105 bthps shoot really well out of this setup up also. If you do decide to rebarrel to 243 and you think you will run the dtacs, I would have it throated for them. I regret not having mine done that way.

Re: 243 to 1000????

105amatt,

You can always buy a throat reamer and lengthen your throat to fit the dtac for the length that you want. Talk to your smith.

Re: 243 to 1000????

Even 90gr Scenars from a 1:10 barrel make it 1000 with good results. When I rebarrel I'll go with a fast twist for the heavies. Very impressed with the LR accuracy.

Absolutely. I just re-barreled my .308 AE MkII with a 26" Krieger in .243. The numbers don't lie.

If I was staying at 500-600 I wouldn't bother because you are going to pay for the performance with barrel life. For 1000 yard competition on unfamiliar ranges where the wind likes to do funny things I will take every advantage I can get.

You will need a fast twist and high BC bullets to get the most out of the .243

Re: 243 to 1000????

what is the barrel life you are seeing? the barrel I am shooting now has several thousand through it and it has opened up to just over .5moa with that said it is a 1-14 barrel and I want to shoot heavy bullets. if your seeing several thousand on the life then I will be fine.

Re: 243 to 1000????

Took the .243 out to 855 yards to confirm my dope today. Shooting through a tricky wind and I tossed the first one (too conservative on my wind call). Drilled the next four into a 66% IPSC.

This was the first time I have taken this barrel past 300 yards. I am going to love this caliber.

Re: 243 to 1000????

I shoot a DTA SRS in a .243 it is a lothat walther 7.5 26". this thing is a hammer, out to 1000 all day long smokes a .308 and keeps up with all the .260 stuff no problem. shooting 2950 fps with a 115 DTAC uncoated on top of rl-25. I'm going to a 6.5 creedmore for two reasons. Bullets are a little heavier and barrel life will probopbly triple. Other than that the .243 is a rocker

Re: 243 to 1000????

My 7.5 twist 22" brux gets me to 1000 without much trouble using 47 grains of H1000 and the 105 vlds. 7.1 mils tells me I'm leaving the muzzle at somewhere around 3025 fps here at about 4600' asl.

The barrel is the cheapest component in the whole equation.
24 lbs of powder + primers $400
2200 pellets $ 400 (cheapest)
500 brass $400
1 barrel plus work $500
Its going to cost you $1200 to wear out the barrel.
Get the most out of every trigger squeeze.
If you get over 2k out of a 243 your doing good. It took me half the barrel life of my first one just to get used to the drastically reduced wind calls. I over called just about everything for the first six months after I switched from 308. I had a hard time believing what my dope/data was telling me.

Re: 243 to 1000????

very interesting. the youtube video showed a very nice low recoil with that Badger brake. Something to definitely look into once the 308 barrel is done.

Re: 243 to 1000????

I have been hitting the plates dead on at the 600m mark with a 6mmx45, or know as 6mm-223.
Using 75 gr. A-max, There is just something about that 6mm pill that works wanders.

Until you try 1000 yards with a full value 10mph wind...then your fucked but I agree that they do very well inside 500-600 yards.

Re: 243 to 1000????

Yeah, never really pushed it beyond the 600 mark. But that is where the 6.5 Grendel loaded with some 108 Lapuas do the trick.
