If you were choosing an ideal "stable" of bolt guns to cover various shooting ranges what would that include. I think I would start with an Anschutz for 0-125 yards, Ruger .204 for 125-300, .308 for 300-1000 and a .338 for 1000+.
What type of ponies would you run in this race?

Re: Ideal Gun Stable

If only Bolt guns,
280 ackley up to 400
300 win up to 1200
408 Chey tec for everything else

Re: Ideal Gun Stable

I run only 2 rifle calibers for target and match shooting.

6.5Creedmoor- 100-1200yards (have shot it to 1760 but typically don't go past 1200)

7Saum- 1000-2150yards. Unless you need the energy down range the 7 has kept up with or out preformed several 338s and 50bmgs at our 2k yard shoots.

Re: Ideal Gun Stable

For target shooting/practice needs:
CZ and Ruger10/22 to 100-125
Tikka .223 to 600
AR-15 to 600
.308 or .260 (bolt) to 1000
AR-10 to 800 (or to 1000

Then past that, wtfk! ^^^ 7SAUM sounds pretty cool though.

Re: Ideal Gun Stable

Ideal bolt guns to cover a wide range? Something in a 6.5/260 for short range ( say 1200-1400 yards and closer, and a 338 Lapua for long range work.

Re: Ideal Gun Stable

10/22 out to 150 yds
.308 out to 1000.
.338LM out to 1760+
Other than that I have way more .308 than .338 so I will just wait for them to get closer.

.308 to 600yds
.300Winmag to 1200yds
.338Lapua beyond 1200yds

I've taken my .300Winmag out to 1350yds but definitely haven't done it enough to be confident, especially not hitting an animal at that distance.

Re: Ideal Gun Stable

Two rifles fit the bill for me.

A Sako Quad for inside 100. This rifle can be made into a 22lr, 22mag, 17 HMR and 17 Mach 2.

A DTA SRS with a .260 or 6.5 Creedmoor. These caliber will readily handle man/deer sized targets out to 1,200. The 7 WSM and 7 SAUM conversions are getting a lot of great reviews for extended long range shooting past 1,200. Or you can jump straight to the .338 LM to get you out further if you need some serious energy down range.

Re: Ideal Gun Stable

Blaser R93's or R8's; one stock-four barrels:

17HMR
6.5x55 or 6.5x284
300 or 338 Mag's several available
9.3x64 or 375 or 416 for the really big stuff

I would argue that very few can consistently hit beyond 1200 yards, so anything above the 6.5x284 or 300 mag's is unnecessary.

Re: Ideal Gun Stable

.22 LR
.17 HMR
.22 Hornet
.250 Sav
.243 Win
.240 WM
.270 Win
7x57
.300 Sav
.308 Win
.44 Mag

if I HAD to narrow it down, I'd keep the .22 LR and the .308. Would add a 300 or 7mm mag or preferably WSM. Probably would add a .260 or 6.5 CM. in reality, I'll keep all of the above and add the others anyway.

Re: Ideal Gun Stable

I don't know as much about all the tactical or wildcat rounds as much as some of you do here, so I would have to stick to the basic ones I know about.

.22LR
.22WMR
.22-250
7mm-08
.30-06

Pedestrian yes, but they would get the job done for me.
